In the first piece of ‘#Vatniks in Hungary’ we’ll examine Laszlo Kover, the Speaker of the House, MP, ex-acting President of the Republic. He comes from a prominent communist background and is known for his vile rhetoric, and hatred for the US, EU, and the West in general. 1/24

United States and Russia. He insisted that the war’s “true reasons” are not found between RU and UA but the war is a result of “America’s strategy” to avoid a multipolar world. 2/24

He said “NATO and some countries of the EU” are participating in the war because of their defense aid to Ukraine. He said the solution is “to stop the killing, sit down at the table and make a compromise with UA’s territorial integrity and RU’s security concerns in mind. 3/24

He changed mind a bit later and claimed that the war in Ukraine in reality is a war between the US and China, not even Russia. “a 6th grade..student is capable to understand that this a US-China war where the US wants to separate Europe from the Eurasian table” he said.4/24

He said the [debate is about] how to make us [Europe] the errand boys and auxiliaries of an America that is struggling with the problem that the world is ceasing to be unipolar and becoming multipolar. (You may be familiar with this theory from the Kremlin). 5/24

He claimed the situation [the war] is because the US is “dangerously close” to losing the leading power role to China and wants to block Europe from uniting “from Portugal to East Asia” to develop the world’s economic center. 6/24

He has a very strong opinion about Zelensky, claiming the Ukrainian president has a “psychotic problem”. Kover was offended by Zelensky’s “tone when asking for help”. He argued the Ukrainian President “should ask politely…and not make threats” 7/24

He also argued that “we have to be very careful so [the Ukrainians] under the disguise of the bigger problem, not thinking about ‘taking care’ of the Hungarian minority”. 8/24

In conclusion to Ukraine, Kover advised that “the Russians are determined so Ukraine should surrender, otherwise Russia will grind up the Ukrainian military, and Ukraine as a state. 9/24

Kover was not very kind to the EU either. He claimed that the “only goal of the EU commission is to destroy the member state’s economies. He also argued an oil embargo against Russia “would actually beef up Russian economic resources” (what?!). 10/24

Kover went absolutely ballistic on the EU and claimed that “they want to convince us that the Russians are unreliable partners…but in reality, the EU was the first to use natural gas as a weapon against Russia with sanctions”. 11/24

He claimed that “Europe is in mortal danger” because “foreign agents, incompetent bastards, and neo-bolsheviks controlling it”. Kover argued it’s a significant possibility that “Western Europe will not survive”. 12/24

In June 2022 he and 3 other Fidesz MPs introduced a resolution (later approved by parl.) in which they would dissolve the EU parliament, forbid the EU to borrow money, curb the authority of EU institutions, and of course condemned the sanctions against Russia 13/24

Kover of course, envisioned an apocalyptic winter for Europe with “freezing homes, tremendous price increases, closing factories, poverty on a societal level, unrest, and turmoil not seen since the second world war”. 14/24

He claimed that in the West the “culture of death is spreading” with Brussels wanting to transform the EU into a “dictatorial empire, wants to erase free and proud nations, to be able to politically dominate and humiliate then plunder the EU’s nations” 15/24

He likes to pick up core elements from Kreml-sponsored propaganda like this nice piece where he tried to scare Hungarians before the April election that their choice will determine if Hungarians will have to eat worms and insects or not. 16/24

Let’s look at his past and domestic image. He comes from an extremely prominent communist background from the Soviet times, with his granddad receiving the “order of merit for the socialist homeland” enabling Kover to automatic university admission 17/24

He was admitted to Eotvos University and got his diploma in 86’. He was a member of the ruling communist party MSZMP. In 86’ he worked for the Central Committee there, and in 88’ became a founding member of Fidesz the current ruling party. 18/24

He brought a lot of experience from his communist years in persecuting and stifling the opposition. In 2021 he held a speech to the Intel Services where he named the opposition as the “gravest danger to national security” and implied they should do something about it 19/24

He’s very keen in fining opposition figures to absurd amounts for “disrespect”, and muting the microphone on opposition speeches. In 2021 he even lost a Strasbourg lawsuit where the court ruled he is using “censorship” against opposition politicians. 20/24

In 2022 he punished an opposition party with a 6 months ban on the party’s invitation rights into the parliament for allowing protesters to make a stand inside the building for teachers' wages. Of course, he ordered the removal of the activists. 21/24

Kover personally pushed out Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO admission vote multiple times saying Fin and Swd “behaved to us in a way that would be harsh even from an enemy”. He argued Russo-NATO borders were negligible before admission so “our safety feeling would drop”22/24

He’s well known for his vile rhetoric also. One of the most famous rants he had was in 2002 when his party was in government he said to the people, “If you don’t like the way we govern, find a strong rope and hang yourself in the basement” 23/24
