Liverpool’s 3-2-2-3 [THREAD]

After years of playing in their familiar 4-3-3, #Klopp decided to switch to a 3-2-2-3 in possession against Arsenal. Since then, the Reds are unbeaten and look completely refreshed.

@Chris17_t analyses the benefits of Liverpool’s new structure below

To create the 3-2-2-3, Alexander-Arnold inverts from the right back position beside Fabinho, while Robertson stays deeper to form the back three. Additionally, the wingers hold the width and the 8s move up in the half-spaces.

Apart from changing the system, Klopp also adapted the way Liverpool controls the game. Rather than focusing on a pretty direct style of play, the Reds now seek to be more patient in possession and aim to advance together with the ball on the ground.

The little movements from the double pivot are vital for Liverpool’s progression and ball circulation: shadow manipulation, dropping into the backline and advancing forward. Moreover, the 8s regularly provide alternative routes to find a 6 with a forward-facing view.

Alexander-Arnold’s passing and crossing abilities as well as his vision are key for the Reds to generate chances. The Englishman has a lot more options to choose from in this central position and he keeps on improving in this “new” role.

I can recommend you this brilliant interview from Alexander-Arnold talking about his new role in the midfield: theathletic.com/4535061/2023/0…

Furthermore, the Reds regularly overload the left side with Robertson/Tsimikas advancing, while Henderson’s runs in behind and the horizontal rotations with Salah are threatening on the other side.

Moreover, as Klopp mentioned in the interview, the Reds still focus on intensity and counterpressing. The compact midfield box enables them to have direct access after losing the ball and pressurize the opposition from various angles to win the ball back and sustain pressure.

The 3-2-2-3 improved Liverpool’s rest-defence as well. Alexander-Arnold’s central role allows him to counterpress in the centre and drop into the backline later on, while Konate covers the right half-space/wing and regularly shines in 1v1s against the opposition’s forwards.

Conclusion:
Even though the 3-2-2-3 strengthened Liverpool with the ball a lot, it’s not all about the shape. Moreover, there’s still a lot of room for improvement and a few summer transfers would be key to bring the Reds back again to their best.
