Hello! A bit of housekeeping: I’m creating a new thread to pin. It’ll be a repository for info on my book, links to podcast appearances, reviews, events, interviews etc. Thanks for your patience on the phenomenon known as First-Time Author Promoting Their New Book a Whole Bunch.
And here's a @chicagotribune interview about why I wrote the book & what I hope it accomplishes with @phillipstribune -- it was such a full circle moment, given that I worked at the Trib for 13 years. Thanks for the delightful chat, Michael! chicagotribune.com/entertainment/…
I spoke with the fab @Snoodit & @TheFienPrint for @THR's TV's Top 5 Podcast about Burn It Down, Lost & much more. @sepinwall was also a guest in a diff segment (nice!). Anyway, I had a blast & thanks for a wonderful conversation, Lesley & Dan! hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/tvs…
I was thrilled to talk to critic, author & journalist @Deggans for @NPR about why I wrote #BurnItDown & myths that linger in the industry: "There's an unspoken rule in some people's heads - 'That person is too considerate to be a genius.'" thanks friend!npr.org/2023/06/03/118…
From Booklist's review of #BurnItDown: "Film and television journalist and critic Ryan has written the kind of book the phrase 'searing indictment' was invented for: a straight-shooting, rigorously researched and documented exposé of Hollywood’s culture of abuse." +
Booklist part 2: "This appears to be the book Ryan’s career has been building toward: she’s never shied away from exposing Hollywood’s darker side. This powerful, angry, shocking & important work should grip all readers interested in the truth about the entertainment industry."
Library Journal review: "By breaking down the various myths entertainment workers are told to believe, the author dismantles the argument that there is no changing the business; she also offers solutions. Readers will come away with a better understanding of what creatives" +
LibraryJournal 2 "have gone through to make shows &films people love. Some readers may even recognize similar harmful behaviors in their own work environments. VERDICT: All workers, as well as TV& movie buffs, can appreciate this well-told book of essays abt labor in Hollywood"
My book, Burn It Down, is out. It's real. I'm a published author. I have to get a new, fancier monocle. In all seriousness, my gratitude to all who bought it already & to the many who made it possible. And I want to share something incredible special with you all. Free to all.
For years, I tried to write an essay about what Charisma Carpenter's work on screen & off meant to me. What Cordelia Chase meant to me. I got there in the end. This is very personal & I'm so proud of it. I hope you'll read An Angel in Hell at The Audacity. audacity.substack.com/p/an-angel-in-…
When 😬 revelations emerge about an industry person, often the discourse revolves around that person. NOT people who did fine work despite enduring awful things. Whether or not you watched the show I write about, witness an attempt to reclaim the narrative audacity.substack.com/p/an-angel-in-…
3 yrs ago, this thread on #SleepyHollow went viral. For everyone who read & added to that painful conversation, I see you. I honor you. I will die mad about some SH things that occurred. If u are a former fan & *don't* want to read that chapter, I get it.
Regardless of whether former fans want to read that chapter, I want everyone to know Black women, femmes & nb people were a huge reason for that show's success. They fed the social media & were the bedrock of the fandom. I am Irish. I don't forget shit. I will *never* forget that
I talked to @realityblurred -- who has been rigorously & thoroughly writing about reality & documentary TV for decades -- about my book. Reality, scripted, whatever it is, it's all storytelling & none of it has to cater to abusive people. Thank you, Andy! realityblurred.com/realitytv/2023…
Really enjoyed this chat w @ScottNeumyer for @byshondaland! "Unless we make it clear that these companies & systems & people allow [this behavior] to happen, we’re going to keep having these repetitive conversations. And that, to me, kind of got old." shondaland.com/inspire/books/…
A book-related ask: @SFdirewolf is a badass & you should read her great memoir, Year of the Tiger. She founded @DisVisibility & she's an important voice in my book. She needs the community's help & you can donate here if you're able to do so. Thank you! 🔥gofundme.com/f/alice-wong-s…
Well damn, my book got reviewed in the New York Times! Whaaaat!? I'm genuinely grateful: Alexandra Jacobs is such a lively and lovely writer and engaged with the book fair & square & I appreciate that 🔥nytimes.com/2023/06/11/boo…
Burn It Down is a New York Times best-seller. I am so grateful to you -- to everyone who has reached out with kind words, to everyone who worked on the book, to everyone who bought it -- you fucking rock. I'm over the moon. THANK YOU 🔥💚😍🥂
The book's rock star team got me on a zoom today & I thought it was to discuss next phases of marketing/promo. Nope, TWAS A RUSE. It was to share this news with me. So now everyone at @MarinerBooks including the publisher has seen my cry face, which was always the dream 😭😉🔥🍾
Talked to @TaraAriano about #BurnItDown type topics, esp those related to comedy realms. In this "as told to," I address creativity, humor & balancing the need to take chances w the kind of toxicity that's too often rewarded in comedy realms. I LOVE this: cracked.com/article_38524_…
Stephen Armstrong of the UK's @Telegraph interviewed me & it was as great conversation -- and as a fellow journalist, I appreciate the deployment of a well-constructed kicker. Read to the end! That last line! 🙌🏻🔥
I'll be adding more links to podcasts & book coverage to this chain, and one I'm super happy to share is this interview with @kimmasters on @kcrw's The Business podcast. Thanks for this great chat, Kim! kcrw.com/culture/shows/…
Oh it would probably have been helpful if I'd actually shared the link to the @telegraph interview about Burn It Down: Here you go! telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/burn-it-d…
So @sagaftra has joined WGA in Hot Strike Summer. First dual industry strike in decades & 1st SAG strike since 2000. I get why. Always been tough for most actors & creatives & as I describe in my book, it's only gotten tougher. Not easy to strike but the time has come. Go get 'em
Great piece from @poniewozik on the wider implications of the entertainment industry strikes: "In the end, Hollywood's fight isn't far from the threats to many of us in today's economy." [gift link so hopefully will work for most folks, even w/o sub] nytimes.com/2023/07/16/art…
I spoke with @WBEZreset @WBEZ about the factors leading to the two entertainment industry strikes. Thanks for a great chat 🔥🙌🏻 wbez.org/stories/hollyw…
@WBEZreset @WBEZ I was among those who talked to @elizblair of @NPR @npratc about the **yikes** situation of films and TV shows getting yanked and disappeared. npr.org/2023/07/24/118…
For no particular reason, reminding you I have an email newsletter, Burner Account and here are all the places I am online fwiw I’ve been posting a fair bit on instagram these days, main/stories even reels wooooo anyway! 🔥🙌🏻💚🦋burner-account.ghost.io/page/2/

Yo! I will be on @ABCNewsLive ABC News Live tonight between 7 pm -8 pm ET (6pm - 7pm CT) talking about the Hollywood strikes, pent-up frustrations among workers in many industry trenches & Burn It Down. Will post the link to the interview when it's up too. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Here's my appearance on ABC News Prime Live last Friday. I so appreciated this conversation about the strikes & why things got to untenable places on a number of industry fronts: abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/…
Been *very* fortunate that Burn It Down has been covered so thoughtfully. One of my absolute favorite pieces is this recent @FortuneMagazine story from @mariaaspan who totally got what I was trying to do (and demystify) with the book. Thank you Maria! 🔥 finance.yahoo.com/news/hollywood…
Absolutely thrilled to go on the Happier in Hollywood podcast with writer/producer/creators Liz Craft and Sarah Fain, it was so super great chatting with them about the strike, the industry and my book. Check it out! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hap…
On my site () there is a list of Burn It Down podcasts/articles (& I add to that a lot), but speaking of podcasts, I recently went back on Screaming into the Hollywood Abyss with @nevslin & @DanRutstein & that was super awesome moryan.com
hollywoodabyss.com/burnitdown/
Had a BLAST on @FactuallyPod with @adamconover (followed Adam's work for years, it was def a "longtime listener, first-time caller" situation for me lol). We discuss the truth about Hollywood in the latest episode--on all pod platforms & also Youtube 🔥🔥
I have a free newsletter, Burner Account. Over there (& on my site) I posted a roundup of the media/podcast (& in-person!) appearances that = my "book tour," which you can mostly access from your couch 😉 Watch for the bonus Kerry Washington mention! 🔥🌸burner-account.ghost.io/the-burn-it-do…
Hello! This weekend is the Printer's Row Lit Fest in Chicago, tons of cool stuff is happening I'll be doing a panel 4pm Sunday with @Karnythia -- can't wait. Hope to see you there 🔥 Full schedule on the PRLF site 👇🏻printersrowlitfest.org
Prior to Printer's Row Lit Fest panel this weekend, I talked with Gwen Ihnat of @BlockClubCHI about Burn It Down, Hollywood's ills & how to fix them: "It’s not rocket science. You know how to make Tom Cruise dangle off a mountain, you can figure this out.” blockclubchicago.org/2023/09/08/for…
