The opening truck chase combines action and comedy set to a great soundtrack. It's literally the film you're about to watch in one scene.

I was 13 when I saw BHC and I'd never heard casual swearing before. Listening to Eddie Murphy and Gil Hill (Inspector Todd) throwing F-bombs around was like hearing Shakespeare for the first time.

3. The Soundtrack

Patti LaBelle's Stir It Up makes this sequence iconic. And Harold Faltermeyer's electronic score is instantly recognisable. It all works. The music in BHC is one of the characters.

4. Eddie Murphy

Eddie was only 21 years old when he filmed BHC. He is astoundingly self-assured. It's a commanding multi-faceted performance throughout. The confidence of the man is astonishing.

5. Characters

Even the most minor roles shine in BHC. Bronson Pinchot has all of about 2 minutes of screen time in BHC, Eddie gives him all the room he needs to turn a small role into absolute gold.

6. Adaptation

Axel was supposed to stuff potatoes into the tailpipe of the car. They couldn't shoot in the kitchen, so they swapped to bananas instead. Which led to this hilarious iconic interaction. Yes, that's Damon Wayans.

7. Ad-libbing

A great deal of BHC is ad-libbed. Judge Reinhold, John Ashton and Bronson Pinchot ad-libbed their lines to fit in with Murphy's natural skill at simply making it up as he went along.

8. Steven Berkoff

Nobody bothered to tell Steven Berkoff he was in a comedy. His chilling performance is perfectly set against Murphy's cocky swagger. Berkoff was a brilliant choice for Victor Maitland.

9. Eddie Murphy... again

This customs scene shows the range of Eddie Murphy. He turns his performance on a dime and flips from comedy to commanding drama in a heartbeat. Perfectly balanced by Ashton and Reinhold in the car

Director Martin Brest was a master of balance. Even during the action sequences, he found time for comedy, and it never seemed out of place. He did the same with Midnight Run.

I consider Beverly Hills Cop to be a perfect movie, not a single moment is wasted.
Eddie Murphy gets most of the praise but he's surrounded by some incredible talent. It's not just one of the best movies of the 80s, it's one of the greatest movies of all time.
