Haven't been able to celebrate Father's Day with my dad in 16 years. He influenced my sports fandom in many ways. (A #FatherAndSon 🧵)
Some of my earliest memories are listening to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey while sitting in between my parents in the bench front seat our Dodge Polara.
He spent countless hours pitching batting practice and hitting grounders to me in our big backyard. He never got the hang of hitting fungoes, though.
He was a big fan of two-sport stars before Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. Countless times during Celtics-Pistons games, he'd say, "Did you know Danny Ainge played for the Blue Jays?"
Or when Kirk Gibson struggled early in his #Tigers career, he'd say, "Gibson should have stuck with football!" 🤣
And when Northwestern made its unexpected run for the Roses in 1995, he paid for my airfare to LA to see this game in person. And he grew to love the Purple as much as the Maize and Blue. Thanks to my father for the endless memories! (end 🧵)
