Bike use is an all-age activity in the Netherlands.
Women over the age of 65 use bikes more than men and incredibly use bikes for a higher percentage of journeys than 20 - 30 year old men! /2
Bike use looks relaxed…. protected infrastructure makes all the difference. /3
Riding two abreast is a social activity, you don’t need to be in a car to sit side by side and talk as you go. /4

Lots of variations of giving people rides /6
Folk are wearing normal clothes /7
Bike lane use both by adapted bikes and mobility scooters. /8
Pregnant? Happily riding around town. /9
Looked like @swapfiets are doing pretty well in the Netherlands./10
And people were moving ladders and ironing boards without blinking /11
Ohhh and did I mention on street. parking everywhere.
Secure storage is important but on
-street cycle parking is the game changer /12
All in all - a great reminder of what good looks like.
This is possible in the UK… we political will and need to start investing in active travel

It’s was profoundly life-affirming to see that the most efficient way to move on the planet, the mode with the best health outcomes makes a city such a pleasant space.
