Hum Aapke Hain Koun turns 29 this week!
After the stupendous success of Maine Pyaar Kiya, Sooraj Barjatya decided to remake the 1982 @rajshri film, Nadiya Ke Paar.

When @rajshri made a film based on Keshab Chandra Mishra's Hindi novel Kohbar ki Shart, they made a small change. They changed the novel's ending. This was Nadiya Ke Paar that released on Jan 1, 1982.
Nadiya Ke Paar was directed by Gobind Moonis in Awadhi language & was successful in the Hindi heartland thanks to its appealing storyline.
The director Gobind Moonis is also responsible for spotting a certain @MadhuriDixit when she was in 12th standard!
Gobind Moonis thought @MadhuriDixit would be appropriate for @rajshri's upcoming movie Abodh.
That said, @MadhuriDixit's acting debut was for the tv show "Bombay Meri Hai"
Nadiya Ke Paar: It is a misconception that this is a Bhojpuri movie. The movie was in Awadhi and starred
@SachinPilgaonkr, @SadhanaGunja, Inder Thakur among others & had music by Ravinda Jain.
The film was moderately successful but its fortunes were important for @rajshri
While the entirety of Hum Aapke Hain Koun was based on Nadiya Ke Paar (except the posh setting), one particular aspect of Nadiya Ke Paar might have played a critical role.

Now, 1982 was 7 years before Maine Pyaar Kiya which marked the debut of Sooraj Barjatya as a director.
He was on the look out for a story, but after some time he finally decided to listen to his father Raj's idea of remaking Nadiya Ke Paar
The logic was simple. Nadiya Ke Paar was in Awadhi and was not seen by a majority of Indians.
It had a story that was simple and had a pan-Indian appeal if made slightly differently.
Thus the "longest marriage video" of all time was born!
Inspired by Keshab Chandra Mishra's Hindi novel Kohbar ki Shart, & @rajshri's own Nadiya Ke Paar, SM Ahale who had also developed Maine Pyaar Kiya developed HAHK with a modern twist.
Instead of a farmer & doctor in rural India, HAHK had a businessman & prof in urban India!
Nadiya Ke Paar was about rural life!
Film critic MK Raghavendra says, HAHK represented the arrival of post-liberalisation economic era in Hindi films. He says "Hindi cinema did away with poor as principal subjects of film narratives & began focusing exclusively on the rich..."

@MadhuriDixit driving in what appears to be a rural setting, but in a jeep.
In Nadiya Ke Paar otoh, @SachinPilgaonkr & Sadhana Singh are on a bullock cart!
Sooraj Barjatya signed @renukash after seeing her on Surabhi for the crucial role of Bhabhi.
Actor Mitali portrayed this role in Nadiya Ke Paar. Renuka Shahane had it in her film contract that Surabhi shooting would be her first priority!

Director-producer Karan Johar is a huge fan of HAHK.
In his autobiography An Unsuitable Boy he says the movie was a turning point for him.
He adds "Everyone who bitched about #HumAapkeHainKoun was not a good person for me. It was my way of judging them as people."

It is widely believed that HAHK brought audiences back to the theaters.
@diptakirti in his book notes that in Bombay's Liberty Cinema Mr. Bharjatya noticed a person with a medical drip attached. The patient said that the film calmed him better than any treatment!
HAHK had a unique release strategy.
@anupamachopra says "producers held back the film from a simultaneous release on video as a hedge against inevitable piracy. It was released in limited theaters with hiked-up ticket prices which further piqued audience curiosity"
The music for the film was composed by Raamlaxman.
The duo of Vijay and Surendra composed music under the name Raam-Laxman.
Mr. Surendra passed away in 1976, however Vijay Patil continued to compose under the same name with a small modification -- Raamlaxman.
Both Nadiya Ke Paar and HAHK stuck to the supposed
@rajshri rulebook.

In the film HAHK, @BeingSalmanKhan's brother played by Mohnish_Bahl is a shown as a painter and so is
@renukash. No such hobbies in Nadiya Ke Paar.
What is really interesting is that @BeingSalmanKhan is actually a hobby painter!
According to this @thecaravanindia article, Keshab Chandra Mishra's novel Kohbar ki Shart went out of print in 2012.

Director @MiraPagliNair has said that her film Monsoon Wedding was partially inspired by HAHK.

To be technically precise:
Nadiya Ke Paar is a filmy translation of Kohbar ki Shart; HAHK is an urbane translation of Nadiya Ke Paar; & Monsoon Wedding is a "Diasporic translation of HAHK".
Therefore, Monsoon Wedding is a diasporic-urbane-filmy translation of Nadiya Ke Paar😇
If you search for Nadiya Ke Paar, you will probably see the 1948 Dilip Kumar starrer by the same name. The only connection with HAHK we could find was that Dilip saab's magnum Opus Mughal-e-Azam released on Aug 5th, the same day as HAHK!

The Fame Game -- > OTT debut of Madhuri Dixit
Guilty Minds --> OTT debut of Sadhana Singh
That said, Guilty Minds has a more direct connection.
Sadhana Singh played the mother of Sachin’s daughter Shriya Pilgaonkar in Guilty Minds.

The actor Saahila Chaddha who played an interesting role where she is confused for "Shakuntala" in HAHK. The actor Saahila starred in the Kannada film Africadalli Sheela.
Africadalli Sheela was inspired by the Sheena, Queen of the Jungle - who rides a Zebra.
Since they couldn't find a zebra when filming the Kannada film, they painted black and white stripes on a horse! 😂
