right after cortini was the one set I was looking forward to the most, like legit my top 1 thing to see out of all of the names at the festival (really) - the bug & flowdan

nasty ass beats from the bug + flowdan my fav mc
I've seen them many many times before - it always banged

and then we got there... soundsystem sounded flat, muffled, & muddy
even standing right in front it was that way
what a disappointment

it wasn't the festival's soundsystem, because every other set on that stage sounded heavy & impactful

idk what exactly went wrong but it blew my mind that absolutely nothing changed during their whole set wrt to sound quality

people still showed up with their energy, there were gunfingers, there was moshing at the front and everything
but I just wish they got to experience the actual full impact sound

friends said Mala played right after and sound was back to normal, everything slapped

hope they don't put me in jail for this but Verraco ending his set at tresor with Skee Mask - Soundboy Ext. was a vibe and a half

stages review:

main stage now has a smaller (still big as) side stage with a horizontal screen

allows for some interesting setups, and the horizontal screen actually looks great (it's massive - loraine james for scale)

left - big stage
right - "small" stage

also super smooth stage transitions - berlin atonal has never been so on schedule! (unbelievable if you were here 2015-2016, but they actually did it)

I would say though, the only caveat is that the sound is noticeably better on the main stage
smaller stage is more muffled

stage null

stage is now located perpendicularly to where it used to be, now facing same direction as the (big) main stage
I think I like it!
always a special place for the more chaotic sets, some of the best stuff happens there

2 drawbacks:

- there's more pillars in the way, and they block the sound, so you have to avoid standing behind those
- sound engineers now directly face the stage, and take up quite a big chunk of space (they used to be on the side), but I imagine it helps them do a better job

ohm:

sound got a bit worse near the (front) entrance somehow?
but it's still a cool place, best times to go are 8pm - midnight and like 4am+, because it quickly builds up a queue after the main stage is done
nothing they can do about it, it's just a tiny ass room

globus

the biggest upgrade
(*berlin person voice* the upgrade happened 2+ years ago)

stage is perpendicular to its former direction - dancefloor is wide rather than long, and that is so much better
big ass speakers + wooden floor means anything bassy will shake your bones

tresor

still the same way it was!
hot & sweaty basement, heavy subs, you lose track of time & you let loose

everyone tells you tresor is a legendary place and stuff (not wrong at all) but nobody cares to mention there's a long corridor leading to it and right in the middle of it there's an odor of wet smelly socks 💀
if someone knows where it's from pls let me know

there's quite a bit of queuing to do to get into tresor/globus at peak time too (1-3am) because of limited capacity but it's just because you can't fit everyone from the main stage into null + the 3 other rooms

Prison Religion annihilated stage null, it was the hardest set I've ever seen there

an instant classic like Marshstepper in 2016

I talked to them a bit before their set, they were so nice and everything, couldn't imagine they were about to scream for an hour straight

on the festival itself - we waited 4 whole years! last time was 2019

they came back in full force and then some more
11 days instead of 5, it was a fucking marathon

it was worth the wait - this one was the best edition they've done yet to me

kraftwerk still is the wildest building

big ass block with enough room to fit 5 stages/clubs

when you play on the main stage, you're 100% playing for that room specifically, because it's so unique in its size, setting, and acoustics

e.g Sandwell District main stage was perfect

Prison Religion and Zebra Katz being on stage null also just made so much sense

each room has its own very unique atmosphere, and you will always find something that is interesting to you if you're not into whatever is being played somewhere

I cannot think of any other place where you're able to get into 5 different clubs without leaving the premises and have so much variety

that shit is a fucking counter strike map

berlin atonal is very much a full body experience in the sense that in any room you'll go you'll feel the music with your full body but also you'll be pushing your body to stay up late so that you can hear more and more music, which does take a toll on your body 10 days in

we did all kind of silly things to stay up like planning some 3-4am naps so we could catch the 6am+ sets

we were exhausted but it was all worth it, and we wouldn't be doing any of this if the music wasn't good

grateful that we got to hear all of this
