This evening, the launch of "Sex and Gender: A Contemporary Reader" was held at the University of Edinburgh.

There was a protest outside of the building where the event was held.

We spoke to people attending to try to understand what was going on.

A 🧵

Sex and Gender was Edited by Prof. Alice Sullivan (@ProfAliceS ) and Prof. Selina Todd (@selina_todd).

It is an exploration of the relationship between sex, gender and gender identity.

It has just been published by @routledgebooks

The Edinburgh University and College Union called for the book launch at the University to be cancelled, as it reduced “trans people to an abstract anomaly or sinister cabal” and breached the Equality Act. (quote via @thetimes )

We spoke to Johnny, who was protesting the book launch.

He said this:

(Unfortunately the video was corrupted, but we still captured audio.)

This announcement was made:

As attendees were leaving the event, there were verbal confrontations.

The police and security kept both groups separate.

As the panel were leaving, they took time to speak with us.

We asked, "What is the book about, and why did you write it"?

Prof. Selina Todd (@selina_todd) responded:

We then asked why they thought people were protesting the launch of their book?

Prof. Alice Sullivan (@ProfAliceS) responded:

Both women mentioned they were feminists. We asked why, as feminists, they had contributed to a book like this.
