A small thread of what is happening with MAPPA and the collective meltdown of animators over the hellish production of Jujutsu Kaisen 🧵

It mostly from animator Honehone's tweet, where he opens up about the impossible and horrible schedule.

The higher-ups at MAPPA only care about the end result and neglect the staff improvements.

Honehone has literally said that JJK0. The movie which $200 million worldwide, completed in a horrible schedule of only 4 months.

The average time of animation production for any feature film is 2-3 years( American/European productions).

The staff has requested a delay but was denied a delay by the production committee. Episodes are being completed mere hours before being aired

This is what Arai Kazuto, director and storyboard of JJK S2 episode 13 said in recent tweets

The Episodes still look good as due to great animators but they are literally dying.

And why there can't be breaks?
Multiple factors. Firstly the production is made up of parties like TOHO and Sheuisha. So unless there's majority, nothing will happen

Ookubo Shunsuke, director of EP12, posted an image from Shirobako, an anime about producing an anime, trying to hang herself, while visibly tired. The character in question is an animator in the story of the show.

Animator Honehone also made this, now deleted, tweet, complaining about the production

"Everything is really too harsh. What do you think of people..."

Tsuchigami Itsuki, also known as "Miso" who is working as an animator on the show, has retweeted all of their old tweets where they criticized Studio Mappa

Amphibli who did the KA and AD work for the show tweeted these things just recently

Kevin, from the sakugabooru which you might remember for talking extensively with care and attention about Anime, its industry and production, talked about this entire situation as well

Hakuyu Go, another animator has talked about this as well...

Mappa wants to be seen in the same light as KyoAni and Ufotable, which is ironic coz their reputations took years to build and are also the studios known for treating their employees well.

Yeah.

One of Ohkubo's earlier tweets literally suggested that the staff might have abandoned production at one point owing to the bad conditions.

A lot of you might remeber Sakai from Attack on Titan, he says he was empathizing with the animators who couldn’t say anything even when the situation got quite extreme

You can find a lot more about all of this in this write-up by @animehunch , who have explained this with far more tweets and sources.

animehunch.com/jjk-s2-animato…

Prominent industry people who have spoken out till now about it:

Itsuki Tsuchigami
Kazuto Arai
Shunsuke Ohkubo
Sota Shigetsugu
Hakuyu Go
Satoshi Sakai (AOT Staff)
Ippei Ichii (on better pay, based on Tsuchigami's tweet)
Shige Asakawa (pointing out that this situation is general)

We do not know where all of this will be heading. We definitely want an animators strike in Japan but there are a lot of factors which go for that to happen as well

Let's hope for the best

Adding to this and JJK0 Movie, Itsuki Tsuchigami (aka. Miso) - the most recent episode's director and storyboard artist - posted a tweet about how pleased they were at the excellent and large impact the episode had within the audience

However they noted that the pay they received for all the extra work they did(the episode was created in a horrible schedule) was horrible: being even lower compared to other similar projects, considering the time that went in.

All of this can only undergo transformation when a significant project, and perhaps multiple projects, eventually implode disastrously under the mounting pressure. Artists inherently strive to avoid producing subpar work.

As long as the current system continues to function, there is little motivation for executives to instigate any changes. Literally zero incentive for executives to change anything.

And imagine the stuff the artists aren't talking about...

MAPPA expects to be KyoAni and UfoTable.

It is unrealistic to expect immediate transformation of every studio into KyoAni. However, what studios aspire to be is within reach.

Anime is only getting popular overseas with demand getting higher. This is simply unsustainable.

I don't know what the conditions for AoT were, but I am assuming they were better. They had something like a year to work on 5 episodes. This is healthy. Ofcourse Hayashi and the team suffered a lot but it wasnt as bad as JJK

However.. if the way MAPPA is continuing with JJK.. god save the artists and animators for whats coming to them in Chainsaw Man Season 2

I would be glad if it doesn't come out for 5 years. Hell, don't even make it. BUT PLEASE LET THE ANIMATORS REST!

I agree with what @NicholasLightTV said here

If there are any updates I will add to this, but yeah. This is the end of this thread.
