Here are some stats to illustrate what has been happening to education in SK. Education quantifiably is only part of the story. Every single child deserves access to good education and the supports needed. SK went from #1 in 🇨🇦 on funding per student to eighth @SaskTeachersFed
We are growing as a province. That’s wonderful! Last school year, provincially we saw a growth of 5,658 students or 3%. Over six years, 11,578 students or 6.3%.
Last year, we lost 145 educators or 1.2%. Go back 10 years and we have seen an increase of 25,000 students (14.7%) and total number of teachers decreased by 15. 25,000 additional students over 10 years and status quo for staffing equals a huge strain & bigger classes.
English as an additional language students have grown by 4,000 over ten years (35.8% increase) while the number of EAL teachers decreased 15.5% (due to provincial cuts to education). Students requiring intensive needs has grown rapidly while number of psychologists has decreased
This is an example of things the government was not willing to look at. The @SaskTeachersFed in negotiations heard from parents and teachers about these areas and when we say “class complexity” an example is “there should be one education psychologist per _ amount of students”
@SaskTeachersFed Or “one EAL teacher per _ amount of EAL students”. These are common sense, fair items to negotiate not only to get back to levels we saw 10 years ago, but should increase as the student population and students requiring more supports increases. Growth that works for everyone.
@SaskTeachersFed Every class has different challenges and this doesn’t tell the whole story. However, look at student to teacher ratios. It all adds up to underfunding education, strain to students and staff, and kids not getting the supports they deserve over the last ten years.
@SaskTeachersFed Anyway you look or measure it, education (and judging by billboards educators) has been under funded and under attack. Teachers have been incredible in doing their best. That’s what we are fighting for and what we will continue to fight for. The kids deserve it and are worth it
