On March 1947, Edwina arrived in India along with her husband Lord Louis Mountbatten who was sent as the last British viceroy to oversee the independence and the partition of the country.

Nehru & Edwina in particular, theirs formed an immediate intimacy as reported by Andrew Lownie in his book The Lives and Loves of Edwina and Dickie Mountbatten

This intimacy is further evidenced by a photograph that was captured of the 2 at The Mountbattenโ€™s first garden party.
