Do you know AI Art and the Camembert de Normandie have more things in common than you might expect?
Allow me to explain why in a stupid and useless reflection thread about AI.
See, I currently work in a factory which, well, makes true "Camembert de Normandie". This is a job I like, and watching litres of milk transform into a weapon of mass destruction is fascinating.
A few years ago, this factory was actually producing two specific kind of Fromages.
The 1st ones were the mechanical ones.
I won't go into detail, but they're not the best products. You just pour curdled milk into molds and bam, you have something that look like a Camembert (see below).
On the other hand, you have the Camembert AOP. These, are hand-mades.
Again, I'll make this quick, but in order to make the true "Camembert de Normandie", you need a true human being who will pour 5 ladles of curdled milk into specific and unique molds. It is a precise and specific movement. If you do it wrong, the cheese won't look/taste good.
But now - and here's the fun part - , there is a newcomer.
The Moulding Robots.
These creatures are built to reproduce the handiwork of a true moulder, and yes, in fact, they create perfect, beautiful Camemberts, and you barely differentiate them from the ones made by humans.
What is truly interesting in this is how these perfect french cheeses made by robots are somehow imperfect precisely because of their perfection.
Something as rude, traditional and stinky as a good old French Camembert doesn't like perfection.
It lacks "something".
It lacks the frank laughs of a moulder who just made a below-the-belt joke.
It lacks the fast movements of two guys challenging themselves so they know who's the best.
It lacks the slow and precise gesture of the woman lost in her thoughts.
It lacks life.
Please look again at this.
Oh, it looks great, sure. Put a very few details aside, you can say it's perfect. Frankly, in all honesty, I can't do this myself, and lots of people will be amazed by the quality of this picture.
But I think it's boring.
...And that's the end!
