Oh hey, I have some actually POSITIVE journalism news to share.
We fully launched @SFGate's Los Angeles Bureau this week! Why did we launch an LA bureau at all? Great question π§΅π
1/ Of the ~1M visits to @SFGate every day, we have as many readers in the Bay Area as we do outside of it in CA.
Why not cover the state top to bottom? We already have editors covering the Central Coast, CA Parks (Yosemite!), Tahoe & Disneyland, expanding to LA was a no-brainer.
2/ While we won't be covering LA politics or the Dodgers/Lakers, we WILL be covering things people in the Bay Area have emotional connections to either because they grew up in LA, went to school in LA or visit often.
And we hired a bunch of awesome LA journalists to do it:
3/ Former Eater LA senior editor @overoverunder is helming the bureau β going to stop right here and share my favorite story he's written so far. Just wow: sfgate.com/la/article/aliβ¦
4/ The bureau includes 3 phenomenal contributing editors.
π Former LA Times arts/entertainment editor @yeehawchsburger covering culture
β°οΈ Former Desert Sun environment reporter @RodeErin covering the Outdoors
π SF ex-pat and former Tasting Table EIC Karen Palmer covering food
5/ Plus we added @AshHayesStone to take πΈ!
We'll still have 43 incredibly talented journalists providing best in class coverage of the Bay Area, but now 9 others covering the rest of CA + Hawaii, including in a lot of complete media deserts.
6/6 We've created 31 new journalism jobs since 2019, expanded our newsroom from 21 to 52, won 49 SF Press Club Awards (including a 1st in overall excellence) & had 0 layoffs.
AND we've still got open jobs plus are always looking for freelancers. Join us!
