During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims break their fast with a meal known as iftar.

With rising food prices affecting many households, we explore the cost of a traditional iftar meal around the world.

As iftar time nears in Pakistan, excitement fills the air for dahi baray, fruit chaat, jalebi and a refreshing rose drink.

Today, a single serving cost of this meal would be 172 rupees ($0.6), up 18% from 2023 due to high inflation.

In Palestine, an iftar meal would cost 31.5 shekels ($9), marking an 11% increase from 2023.

We're now in Turkey, where many families will feast on dolma, cacik, muhallebi, and salgam for iftar.

Due to soaring inflation. The cost of this iftar meal has risen to about 60.5 lira ($1.9), an increase of about 20% from the previous year.

In the world’s largest Muslim nation, Indonesia, iftar traditions feature bubur, bakwan, kolak pisang and a glass of es timun suri.

To prepare the meal, it would cost 66,600 rupiah ($4.2) per serving, up 6% from 2023.

Next, we visit Egypt, where rich centuries-old traditions and culinary heritage await. The iftar table would include stuffed grape leaves, molokhiya, kunafa, and qamar al-din.

This meal would cost 68 EGP ($1.4), up 74% from 2023.

Nigerian cuisine is known for its vibrant spices. On a Nigerian iftar table, there will be jollof rice with chicken, moi moi, fruit salad, and zobo to drink.

This meal would cost 6,500 naira ($4.4), reflecting an increase of about 68%.
