Stalin's invasion of Northern Bukovina in 1940 violated the Molotov-Ribbentrop signed on the 23rd of August, 1939, between Germany and the Soviet Union.

More non-aggression pacts Stalin broke were the Soviet-Lithuanian pact of 1926, and the Soviet-Estonian pact of 1932. Stalin also broke the Soviet–Latvian Mutual Assistance Treaty signed in 1939.

Another non-aggression pact Stalin broke was the Soviet-Finnish pact of 1932 . On the 30th of November, 1939, Stalin launched an invasion of Finland. 21 Soviet divisions made up of 450,000 Soviet troops crossed the Finnish border.

All three Baltic countries - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania were all occupied by the Soviets by June 1940. Lithuania was annexed on the 3rd of August, followed by Latvia on the 5th, and Estonia on the 6th.





On the 21st of June, the eve of Operation Barbarossa, Alfred Liskow, a German soldier and deserter crossed the Bug River, and surrendered to Soviet troops. He told them at dawn the next day the Germans would attack.







Recruitment for Spanish volunteers began on the 27th June and by early July 18,000 Spaniards had enlisted. Recruitment for Croatian volunteers began on the 2nd of July and by mid July 9,000 Croatians had enlisted.


During the war almost one - million Soviet citizens sided with the Germans. Approximately 15,000 Russians served in the Waffen SS.
