THE YOUTUBE FILES PART 3.
Before finalizing a new content moderation policy proposal, YouTube asked the Biden White House to review and for their “feedback.”
🧵 Thread:
.@JudiciaryGOP and @Weaponization obtained internal Google docs revealing the Biden White House’s pressure campaign against YouTube.
As revealed in the YouTube Files, the company was concerned things could “spiral out of control” and wanted to stay on good terms with the White House because they were seeking “to work closely with [the Biden] administration on multiple policy fronts.”
Throughout the spring and summer of 2021, the Biden White House was particularly focused on “borderline content”—that is, content that did not violate YouTube’s terms of service.
For example, in July 2021, Rob Flaherty forwarded this tweet to YouTube:
They asked why YouTube wasn’t more aggressively censoring this type of content, including a congressional hearing featuring Senator @RandPaul.
YouTube explained that the videos were “not in violation of our community standards.”
But that resistance by YouTube was short lived.
By September 2021, YouTube had a developed a new content moderation policy proposal that would more aggressively censor content that was allegedly misleading about the safety and efficacy of vaccines.
But before this “proposal” was “finalized,” YouTube ran the policy by the Biden White House to get their “feedback.”
What did the Biden White House think of this new censorious policy proposal?
“at first blush, seems like a great step”
The Biden White House censorship campaign was so intrusive that Big Tech felt the need to run policy proposals by them.
