With the reveal of Clover's real name being Claíomh D Clover, I'm reminded of an Irish folktale I knew as a kid called, "The Weaver's Son & the Giant of the White Hill" & wanted to talk about it a little bit. It features the common trope of the claíomh.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
The Claíomh Solais, or the sword of light, is a trope seen in many Irish and Scottish Gaelic folktales. Often times, it can be a shining sword that protects the user from harm. Other times, it's depicted as a lightning bolt.

In the tale of the "Weaver's Son and the Giant of the White Hill," we see the claíomh solais depicted as a protective shining sword.
Let me tell you the story of the Weaver's Son. 😊
"Say farewell to Weaver's Town..."
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
A weaver sells his 3 daughters to 3 different suitors for sacks of gold, silver, and copper without telling his family. Devastated, his son sets out to find his missing sisters. On his journey, he met a red-haired man whom he shared his dinner with.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Appreciating his kindness, the red-haired man gives him the things he may need for his journey: a cloak of darkness that provides invisibility, a cloth that never runs out of meat to eat, and the claíomh solais that will protect him from dying when held.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
On his travels, the weaver's son falls down a hole in front of a giant oak tree, finding a new country & a castle by the sea where his first sister is being held. He's welcomed inside & learns that her husband is a ram during the day & a man at night.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
His sister's husband gives the weaver's son some of his wool and says if he ever needs help on his journey, call for help holding the wool and all rams nearby will come to help him. The weaver's son continues on his journey to find his other sisters.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
The weaver's son finds a 2nd castle by the sea where his 2nd sister is. He's welcomed yet again & learns that his sister's husband turns into a fish by day & a man at night. He offers the weaver's son a scale & says fish will help when he calls for them.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Further on his journey, he finds a 3rd castle where his final sister is. He's welcomed & learns that his sister's husband turns into an eagle by day & a man at night. He's offered an eagle feather and told eagles will help when he calls for them.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
At the 3rd castle, he sees a tall hill with a shining white castle on top. He's told that a giant lives there & the giant is holding the most beautiful woman in the world captive inside, killing anyone who tries to rescue her. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Using his cloak of darkness, the weaver's son sneaks inside the giant's castle, promising the beautiful woman that he'll rescue her. The woman learns that to kill the giant, you must retrieve a duck in a treasure chest hidden at the bottom of the ocean.
#ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
If you smash the duck's egg on the giant's chest, it is the only way to end the giant's immortality and slay him once and for all. Using the fish scale he was given, the weaver's son calls the fish to bring him the chest at the bottom of the sea. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Using the wool, the weaver's son calls the rams to break open the chest to retrieve the duck. The duck quickly flies away but using the feather, the weaver's son calls upon the eagles to bring him an egg from the duck. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
The weaver's son then battles the giant with the claíomh solais, receiving no damage while mortally wounding the giant. Then the weaver's son smashes the duck egg on the giant's chest, killing him once and for all. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Finally, the weaver's son & the woman steal the giant's treasure of gold & return to his sister's castles to feast for weeks. He returns the wool, scale, and feather to each brother, thanking them for their help. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
He encounters the red-haired man again where he returns the cloak, cloth, and claíomh solais, grateful for his help on his journey. In the end, the weaver's son and the woman get married and use the giant's gold to build themselves a castle & kingdom. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
Knowing this story about the claíomh solais from Irish folklore, I can see how it has parallels to the story in One Piece. Perhaps Joy Boy takes some inspiration of the weaver's son, journeying around the world to find Nefertari D Lili in Mariejois. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
There's the parallel of the red-haired man giving our hero the things he needs for his journey, the same way Shanks gives Luffy his straw hat (and devil fruit). Having those items returned at the end reflects Luffy returning the hat to Shanks #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
There's also a theme of sharing food. The weaver's son shares his meals & is rewarded for it. He also asks the woman held captive by the giant for food in exchange for helping her escape. Many times doe stuffy help people at the price of a meal. #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
That's all from me for now but I'd love hear more thoughts from others on this folktale & how it can relate back to One Piece. I think there's a lot of potential & depth to explore. "The Weaver's Son & the Giant on the White Hill" can be found online. 😊 #ONEPIECE1120 #OPSPOILERS
