The bill @CAGovernor Newsom signed into protects the child-parent relationship by PREVENTING politicians & school staff from inappropriately intervening in family matters & attempting to control if, when, & how families have deeply personal conversations.
Under California law, minors CANNOT legally change their name or gender WITHOUT parental consent & parents are GUARANTEED the right to access their students’ educational records.
This law:
Does NOT allow a student’s name or gender identity to be changed on an official school record without parental consent.
Does NOT limit a student’s ability to discuss their gender identity with their own family.
Does NOT take away or undermine parents’ rights. AB 1955 does not prevent families from having these conversations.
Does NOT allow teachers & school districts to hide information from parents.
About that “move,” let’s take a look at how Texas’ leadership “protect their children”:

- CA generates twice the IPOs (from 2011-2022) and new businesses (2019-2022) as TX, & nearly 4X the patents.
- TX has among the most regressive tax systems in the country while CA has one of the most equitable tax systems.
- CA is:

#1 for access to venture capital funding
#1 for tourism spending
#1 for manufacturing
#1 for high-tech
#1 for agriculture
And, CA continues to be the 5th largest economy in the world!
