[THREAD]: WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BANGLADESH RIGHT NOW ? 🇧🇩
Since the beginning of July, students in Bangladesh have been protesting and blocking major roads, demonstrating against a controversial law since 1971: the quota rule.
What does this law say ?
In 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, decided that for the 2 million civil service positions today, half would be filled not based on merit but through affirmative action favoring women and residents of less developed areas
A controversial law
The most controversial aspect of this quota system is that 30% of civil service positions are reserved for the children and grandchildren of those who fought for Bangladesh's independence in 1971.
Civil service jobs offer stable, lifelong employment, but students argue the quota system is corrupted to favor Awami League supporters. They want it limited to ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, with 94% of jobs based on merit.
Since the beginning of July, students from #DhakaUniversity , the most prestigious in Bangladesh, have launched a protest against this law. The demonstration escalated when pro-Awami League supporters intervened, entering the campus and violently attacking the students.
Since then, other universities in the capital have been shut down in support of the Dhaka University students. High school students joined the protests, and later, other campuses across the country were also shut down.

Clashes between students and pro-government supporters are ongoing and becoming increasingly violent.

The protest by students from Dhaka University holds significant symbolism in Bangladesh because these are the same students who protested for the official recognition of Bangla as the national language 🇧🇩
I fully support the students in Bangladesh who are protesting against an unjust and corrupt law ✊🇧🇩
ALJAZEERA IS TALKING ABOUT THE PROTEST !!🇧🇩🫡
⚠️ several students have just been run over by the police in Dhaka
in 2018, students demonstrated for the same reasons which pushed the Prime Minister to abolish the law. But last June this law was reinstated in the constitution…
