I'm going to put together a thread covering night 1 of the 2024 DNC in Chicago, featuring a headlining speech from President Biden. Follow along for clips and commentary.

I'm going to spend the whole week watching every second of the DNC. If you appreciate my efforts, please show some love by signing up for my newsletter. I think you'll enjoy PN and paid subscribers make my work possible. Thanks. publicnotice.co/subscribe

and we're underway with a cute Pledge of Allegiance

Wow. Really good National Anthem too.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says of Kamala Harris, "I know that my daughter will see not only a reflection of herself in the White House, but she will experience the deepest part of American values ... Kamala Harris -- she's got us."

we're getting so much Chicago hype right now that I half expect CM Punk to walk on stage

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison: "It's gonna take more than hope to win this election. So in the next 78 days, our motto can't be just 'while I breathe I hope,' it must be 'while I breathe I vote.'"

Maxine Waters shimmies off the stage

"Good evening. I'm Derek Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP. And I'm here to do my Black job."

Jesse Jackson is on stage!

emotional scenes in the crowd as Jesse Jackson gets a big round of applause

adding this to my thread since in my initial post I misspelled @DerrickNAACP's first name. My apologies!

@DerrickNAACP big "USA!" chants at the DNC as Tim Walz's VP nomination is reaffirmed

@DerrickNAACP Minnesota Lt Gov Peggy Flanagan praises Tim Walz for his "bottomless bag of snacks -- Nutter Butters, cheese curds, and Diet Dew."

@DerrickNAACP Flanagan gets emotional talking about her brother, who was the second person to die of covid in Tennessee. The DNC then plays a montage of Trump's irresponsible covid rhetoric.

@DerrickNAACP Rep. Robert Garcia: "We all remember the world in 2020 ... for some of us, who we lost ... what we needed at that moment was national leadership. But instead, we got Donald Trump ... my mom and stepfather both died of the covid pandemic."

@DerrickNAACP Garcia: "My mom taught me to love this country. She taught me that real American patriotism is not about screaming 'America first.' Real American patriotism is loving your country so much that you want to help the people in your country."

@DerrickNAACP Damn. This is heartbreaking but inspiring stuff.

@DerrickNAACP Durbin: "Donald Trump did make history. Let's give him credit. He is one of only two presidents in the history of the United States to leave office with fewer Americans working than we he started."

@DerrickNAACP Rep. Joyce Beatty: "JD and Trump like to talk about states like Ohio. But Kamala and Joe actually get stuff done for us."

@DerrickNAACP LA Mayor Karen Bass on Harris: "When I asked her to swear me in -- the first woman VP swearing in the first woman mayor of LA -- we knew we were sending a message to young girls everywhere that they too can lead."

@DerrickNAACP Wisconsin Lt Gov Sara Rodriguez: "During the covid pandemic, Trump and Wisconsin Republicans failed to protect our health. That's why I ran for office and flipped a red district blue. Because once a nurse, always a nurse."

@DerrickNAACP California Lt Gov Eleni Kounalakis on Harris: "Once, I told her about a professional experience of being minimized because I was a woman. She put her fork down and said, 'Eleni, never let anybody make you feel small.' I saw her put that creed into action."

@DerrickNAACP "They went ahead and wrote down all the extreme things Donald Trump wants to do over the next four years. And then they just tweeted it out" -- Mallory McMorrow brought a printed out copy of Project 2025 on stage with her

@DerrickNAACP Laphonza Butler: We deserve a president who shatters the boundaries of what's possible, not the boundaries of what's legal

@DerrickNAACP Don't know much about him, but I like this Jason Isbell song. My style of dad rock.

@DerrickNAACP the DNC put together a video montage highlighting Harris's working class roots and contrasting them with Trump working hard "to spend his daddy's fortune" -- there's even a clip of Trump with Epstein in there

@DerrickNAACP she forgot a word

@DerrickNAACP Hochul: "Donald Trump was born a New Yorker, but he ended up a fraud, a philanderer, and a felon."

@DerrickNAACP Hochul: "Trust me America. If you think you're tired of Donald Trump, talk to a New Yorker ... he abuses women, brags about it, and then takes away their rights."

Kamala makes her first appearance to a huge pop

Harris: "This November we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people -- we are moving forward."

they did the Bulls classic intro for Steve Kerr!

Steve Kerr: "I know very well that speaking out about politics these days comes with risks. I can see the 'shut up and whistle' tweets fired off as we speak. But I also knew as an American citizen that it was too important not to speak up in an election of his magnitude."

"Way too much reliance on the blitz in '99 against Mankato East" -- Steve Kerr teasing Tim Walz about his football coaching is the best

Kerr: "After the results are tallied that night, we can -- in the words of the great Steph Curry -- we can tell Donald Trump, 'night night.'"

Shawn Fain: "For us in the labor movement, it's real simple: Kamala Harris one of us ... and Donald Trump is a scab."

The DNC crowd responds by chanting, "Trump's a scab!"

AOC's speech is interrupted by "AOC! AOC!" chants

"Thank you Joe Biden for your leadership" -- AOC

AOC: "In Kamala Harris, we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class"

AOC: "We know Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets & greasing palms of his Wall St friends. And I for one am tired of hearing about how a 2 bit union buster thinks of himself as more of a patriot than the woman who fights every single day"

AOC: Republicans attack me by saying I should go back to bartender. But I'm happy to any day of the week because there's nothing wrong with working for a living.

big pop for Hillary Clinton

wow. The round of applause went on and on for Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton: "Something is happening in America. You can feel it. Something we've worked for and dream of for a long time. First though, let's salute President Biden. He has been democracy's champion at home and abroad."

Hillary Clinton: "It was the honor of my life to accept our party's nomination for president. And nearly 66 million Americans voted for a future where there are no ceilings on our dreams. And afterward, we refused to give up on America ... well my friends, the future is here."

Hillary Clinton: "The story of my life and the history of our country is that progress is possible but not guaranteed. We have to fight for it."

Hillary Clinton: "He's mocking her name and her laugh -- sounds familiar -- but we have him on the run now ... no matter what the polls say we can't let up."

adding this surreal moment to my thread 👇

Hillary Clinton wraps up a great speech: "On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office as the 47th president ... this is when we break through ... let's go win it."

Clyburn hits Trump for lying about his ignorance of Project 2025, which he describes as "Jim Crow 2.0."

"He sexually abuses women ... he cheated on his wife with a porn star and paid her off so the American people wouldn't find off during an election" -- the DNC put together a video highlighting Trump's myriad legal problems and contrasting them with Harris's record as a prosecutor

Raskin: "It's been a little rough on Capitol Hill, where it's not just the heat, it's the stupidity ... we fight in our time to defend our freedom and our democracy against the banana Republicans who have converted Lincoln's Party into a dangerous cult of personality."

Raskin: "Someone should've told Donald Trump that the president's job under Article 2 of the Constitution is to take care that the laws are faithfully executed, not that the vice president is executed ... JD Vance, do you understand why there was a sudden job opening?"

Raskin: "Let's make it a landslide so big that Donald Trump and his kangaroo Supreme Court justices can't even try to steal it"

Jasmine Crockett says Trump "was born in a silver spoon in his mouth and helped his daddy with the family business -- housing discrimination" and calls him a career criminal "with 34 felonies, 2 impeachments, and one porn star to prove it"

Crockett: "She's lived the American dream, while he's been America's nightmare ... Kamala Harris has a resume. Donald Trump has a rap sheet ... he keeps his national secrets next to his thinking chair."

Crockett gets emotional while reflecting on visiting Vice President Harris's residence for the first time

The DNC put together a video highlighting some of Trump's heinous actions and comments on reproductive rights

"I'm here tonight because the fight for reproductive rights isn't just a woman's fight. This is about fighting for our families" -- a couple that sued Texas over its abortion ban shares their heartbreaking story at the DNC

"Trump calls it a beautiful thing. What is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent's child?"

Andy Beshear: "In Kentucky, we put reproductive freedom on the ballot last November and I beat Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell's hand-picked candidate by more than 5 points."

Beshear: "Their policies give rapists more rights than their victims. That's not inconvenient. It's just plain wrong ... all women should have freedom to make their own decisions."

Beshear: "America, we're going to win. And we're gonna win by staying true to our values of compassion, empathy, and doing right by our neighbors."

Notable: Fox News and Fox Business have shown almost none of the DNC speeches tonight. Instead, they've had their panel of talking heads bloviate while you can see the speeches happening behind them.

Almost like they don't want to burst their viewers' right-wing bubbles.

Warnock: "Behind the big lie was an even bigger lie. It is the lie that this increasing diverse American electorate does not get to determine the future of the country ... Donald Trump is a plague on the American conscience."

Warnock goes on to encourage Trump to read the bible

Warnock: "We believe that a patient's room is too small and cramped a space for a woman, her doctor, and the US government ... we are moving forward."

Warnock: "I need my neighbor's children to be okay so that my children will be okay. I need all of my neighbor's children to be okay ... the poor children of Israel and the poor children of Gaza ... those in Ukraine ... I need American children on both side of the track to be ok"

As we await the speeches from Jill and Joe Biden, let me remind you that if you appreciate this thread, please show some love by signing up for my newsletter. It's good (if I do say so myself) and paid subscribers make my work possible. Thanks. publicnotice.co/subscribe

Jill Biden said Joe "reached deep into his soul" before deciding not to run for reelection

Ashley Biden: "Joe Biden is the OG girl dad"

Ashley Biden: "When Hunter and I lost our brother Beau to cancer in 2015, the grief and the pain felt like it might never end. Dad had the capacity to step out of his own pain and absorb ours. And I know that Beau is here with us tonight."

President Biden is wiping away tears even before his speech

absolutely huge reception for Biden, as there should be

Joe Biden shouts out his wife Jill: "Everybody knows I love her more than she loves me."

Biden: "America, I love you!"

DNC crowd: "We love Joe! We Love Joe!" We love Joe!"

Biden: "Are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?"

Biden begins his speech by reminding the DNC of the rough state of the country in January 2021 when he took office. He then says, "democracy has prevailed. And now democracy must be preserved."

Biden notes Charlottesville demonstrators were "so emboldened by a president then in the White House that they saw as an ally, they didn't even both to wear their hoods"

"I had to listen to the admonition of my dead son. I could not stay on the sidelines. So I ran," he adds

Biden: "Because of you, we've had one of the most extraordinary four years of progress ever, period. And when I say 'we,' I mean Kamala and me."

Biden: "Donald Trump promised infrastructure week every week for four years. And he never built a damn thing."

"I'm proud to have been the first president to walk a picket line and be labeled the most pro-union president in history. And I accept it. It's a fact" -- Biden

Biden: "We passed the most significant climate law in the history of mankind"

Biden: "I'm gonna say something outrageous. I know more foreign leaders by their first names and know them well than anybody alive. Just because I'm so damn old."

Biden: "Trump continues to lie about crime in America, like everything else ... violent crime has dropped to the lowest level in more than 50 years. And crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon."

Biden: "MAGA Republicans found out the power of women in 2022. And Donald Trump is gonna find out the power of women in 2024."

Biden on Trump's "suckers and losers" comments: "Who in the hell he think he is? Who does he think he is!?"

Biden reiterates his desire for a ceasefire in Gaza and says of protesters "have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed, on both sides."

Biden: "It's been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your president. I love the job. But I love my country more."

"Like many of our best president, she was also a vice president" -- Biden

Biden: "All of us carry a special obligation -- independents, Republicans, Democrats -- we saved democracy in 2020, and now we must save it again in 2024."

Biden winds down his DNC speech: "America, I gave my best to you. I made a lot of mistakes in my career. But I gave my best to you."

Harris and Doug Emhoff join the Bidens on stage to close out night one of the DNC. Harris appears to tell Biden she loves him.

Night 1 of the DNC is in the books. It was very emotional. If you appreciate me bringing you all the highlights, please show love by signing up for my newsletter. I think you'll enjoy it and paid subscribers make my work possible. Thanks. publicnotice.co/subscribe
