Thread of Mecha designers, what they're famous for, and some of my thoughts on them

Kunio okawara

One of the originals, he was responsible for the designs in the original gundam. Several of his designs are emulated today! Many of his designs are drawn in the okawara pose. He also made wooden models of his designs as part of the creative process

Hajime katoki

Bandai hired him for some gundam designs and did so good that he was made the franchises lead designer for a time.

His works are clean and detailed. He is criticized for both this and the long legs he gives his ms Despite every gundam having that

Yutaka Izubuchi

One of my favorites, he's worked on multiple series including patlabor and gundam. He is also a director famous for his cryptic writing style.

His designs blend geometric and curvy shapes elegantly and have popularized the use of "Izubuchi holes "

Makoto kobayashi

This man uses Twitter like your grandfather uses Facebook. However he has worked on several high profile and independent projects

His cross hatching, obling silhouettes, and love of cables make his Mecha seem more like biomechanical aliens, which i love

Kazuhisa kondo

Kondo is a talented artist known for various obscure gundam stories

He likes his Mecha thick and well armored. Often designing them with giant shoulders and skirt armor. His artstyle pairs well with kobayashi's

Mamoru nagano

Since the first gundam series, nagano has routinely made some of the most popular designs in director tomino's many works

His Mecha are very detail heavy and Often sport a pointy, lanky frame with big shoulders

Kazumi fujita

Responsible for the first gundam zeta design and gundam hathaway, his current whereabouts are unknown

His style 8s a balance between kobayashi's unconventional shapes with nagano's details on a stout frame, the results are incredible

Kenki fujioka

Famous for his gundam advance of zeta works, fujioka has blown away countless mecha fans with his Mecha designs

His Mecha have great proportions, silhouettes, gimmicks, geometric edges, and clean linel work, he's one of the best

Shinji aramaki

Growing up watching gundam, shinji would go on to make a huge impact on the anime industry. Working as a director and artist who sees every genre as a new avenue for creativity

He is fond of the concept of powered armor, as opposed to traditional Mecha

Yoji shinkawa

Metal gear fans need no introduction. This man has worked on almost every hideo Kojima work.

His artstyle is reminiscent of traditional Japanese calligraphy, while his Mecha range from heavy realism to reality warping sci fi

Masami obari

While he is responsible for many designs, he's most known for putting his own spin on existing ones.

If you've ever seen a gundam look more buffamd dynamic, you've seen his work

The obari pose is referenced in media more than most other anime references

Katakane ebikawa

Say that 3 times fast

Ebikawa has worked on many modern gundam shows and Mecha anime

His work is most famous for making the most from simple geometric shapes

Ippei gyobu

A new kid on the block, gyobu did such a good job with his g reco designs that he's been repeatedly hired by bandai like katoki

His art is crisp, clean, and detailed with very saturated colors. Although his designs can be a bit "taffy stretched" if let loose

Naohiro washio

He designed my favorite gundam, as well as the rahxephon creatures

alot of his Mecha have a strange curvy motif to them, although the legs often share a common shape

He is fond of og 5th generation fighters looking at his aircraft designs

Syd mead
Rest in peace

He's the guy behind the cityscape and flying cars of Blade Runner
However, he was asked to create the designs for turn a gundam

his designs have a very art deco meets cubing style

Not my favorite style but still a talented man

Geof Darrow

The man behind the matrix machines, this comic artists details make him an American kobayashi with the opposite politics

I wasn't kidding about the kobayashi bit, look at these details and shapes

Kazutaka miyatake

One of the armored core teams heavy hitters, he also designed the namesake of the macross franchise

Im not too familiar with him, but I loved the work he did on ac6

Shoji kawamori

He's worked on almost everything

Armored core, gundam, macross lego, you name it

He actually uses Legos as part of his design process

He likes his designs sleek, and has a good sense of getting the flow and rhythm of shapes to compliment the form

Junya Ishagaki

He may be my favorite

Like kawamori, he's been everywhere, though i know him from the xenoblade games

He can draw any kind of Mecha, but he is a master of the sleek, curvy look. He can keep it simple or get more detailed than the inside of a watch

Im taking a break, let me know if I forgot anyone

Ikuto yamashita

The guy behind Evangelions signature monster Mecha, he got hired onto the armored core 6 team

He's a fan of segments and frilly shapes, which i can get behind

Takayuki yanase

I wasn't aware of this guy, but he designed some Mecha from xenoblade, gundam 00, the witch from mercury, armored core, and ghost in the shell

He likes his Mecha blocky, but still interesting to look at

Junichi Akutsu

Another gundam boy, he is often hired by bandai to turn Mecha concepts into model kits and figures

If you've seen a good build fighters or astray gundam you know what this guy can do

katsuhisa yamaguchi

A toy designer at revoltech, ge is as good at putting his own spin on Mecha designs as he is with the human figures

Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with him. Thus is @burningred28 's department

@burningred28 Go nagai

A pioneer of the Mecha genre, go nagai is responsible for the historical mazinger anime and jeeg

His artstyle layed the foundation for succeeding Mecha shows and other media, he is revered by Ken Ishakawa as his "greatest friend and ally"
he's like a founding father

@burningred28 Ken Ishakawa
Rest in peace

One of the big 3 in the Mecha genre, he is responsible for getter robo. He worked closely with his dear friend, Go Nagai

Go read getter robo, it's hilarious and awesome, the main robots ability was inspired by a car crash

@burningred28 joel emslie

Originally a call of duty designer, he would make the kit bash models that various machines in titanfall would be based on

I owe much of my fascination of Mecha and design philosophy to this man

@burningred28 Simon Stålenhag

Author of tales from the loop, things from the flood, and the electric state

He loves drawing big robots in the distance of a foggy field. But he is good with creatures and structures too.

I like his creative ideas in his writing

@burningred28 Ashley wood

Admittedly i don't know alot about him, but he has a huge portfolio as a concept artist with involvement in metal gear and transformers

He likes using oil paints and digital tweaking to create a gritty pill shaped artstyle. I like it!

Yes, I know it's Katakane

@DuoFuxwell Well two of them

Here's the other 2

Masamune Shiro

Father of ghost in the shell, appleseed. His real name is Masanori Ota. he looks like Jacob batalon

a great writer who often explores human relationships with technology and its effect on us

His Mecha are sleek and round, and he's got a thing for spiders

takehiko itō

Known for outlaw star, detonator orgun and patlabor the movie

His portfolio is much more diverse than just Mecha, he seems to specialize in characters
