Why Luke Dashjr Is A #Bitcoin Legend

Jack Dorsey calls him Bitcoin's "Guardian Angel"
BTC developer since $0.30

A thread. 🔥

1/ Luke discovered #Bitcoin in 2010.

He was at New Year's Eve Party on an IRC chatroom.

The price was just $0.30 ‼️

2/ Since 2011, Luke has been an official BIP Editor.

He volunteers his time to vet proposed changes to #Bitcoin, or Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs).

This is a MAJOR part of technical consensus 👏

3/ Later in 2011, Luke started one of the 1st-ever mining pools.

Called Eligius, it allowed miners to "pool" their hashpower to better monetize their efforts.

He helped others mine OVER 300,000 $BTC ‼️

4/ During Bitcoin's first big soft fork in 2012, Luke proposed BIP 17, a standard for multi-sig wallets.

The proposal was contested by Bitcoin's "lead developer," who asked him to leave the project. Luke refused.

Today, BIP 17 is widely seen as a superior solution 👏

5/ In 2013, Luke came to #Bitcoin's defense again.

He was one of the first to detect an accidental hard fork caused by a developer change.

If unchecked, it could have split the network in two ‼️

6/ Amid the Block Size wars, Luke again came to #Bitcoin's aid.

When all progress was blocked, Luke figured out how to implement SegWit as a soft fork block size increase.

It's a key reason the network can process 4MB blocks today 👏

7/ By 2016, Luke was one of the top #Bitcoin developers in the world.

He had over 1,000 commits, or approved changes to the protocol.

Almost as many as Satoshi Nakamoto 🤯

8/ In 2017, Bitcoin was in a full-blown civil war.

Luke was one of the only #Bitcoin core developers to support the UASF movement that enacted SegWit.

The UASF proved ONCE AND FOR ALL that users, not businesses or miners, drive consensus 🏆

9/ Today, Luke develops #Bitcoin Knots.

It's one of the few alternative software implementations for Bitcoin.

The ability to write alternative implementations is a key feature of the network. It keeps Bitcoin decentralized 👏

10/ In 2023, Luke launched a new mining pool called Ocean.

It raised $7 million from investors like Jack Dorsey.

Ocean decentralizes mining by paying miners from the protocol directly, and letting miners NOT POOLS vet transactions 👏

11/ Luke continues to advocate against centralization.

Here he is speaking out against larger blocks in 2019.

It's one of the best explanations of how they can harm the #Bitcoin network 💖

12/ Despite raising a family of 10 KIDS, Luke continues to volunteer his time to #Bitcoin.

He's continued to do this – even when companies wouldn't support his work.

He did persevered for years 👏

13/ By many metrics, Luke continues to be one of the top #Bitcoin developers.

Here's a list of the top BIP authors by volume.

Luke is ranked #2 in the world 👏

14/ Today, Luke continues to fight to keep #Bitcoin decentralized.

He remains one of the project's key independent voices
