A review of matcha lattes in London, the good, the bad... & the merely overpriced 🍵💞💸✨🏙️

Guillam Coffee House (Gloucester Rd, Notting Hill, Green Park)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Delicious. Extra marks for location as you never know what you might overhear from the mental posho clientele as you're sipping away. Laptops banned- but that’s probably a blessing in disguise.

Cafe Mori Japanese Tea House (Wimbledon)

⭐️⭐️

Cute pastries. Great lighting if you want to take a new profile picture. Shame about the powdery drink...

Blank Street (Various)

Probs the best overall option in terms of quality, price and the fact they have a lot of locations. Only request is that they open one in SW1 so that postcode can end its plight as a high-quality matcha desert.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Notes (St Johns Wood, Kings X etc)

The cafe equivalent of a “personality hire”. Matcha is overpriced and slightly too powdery.

Warning, you may be tempted to spend money on clothes & shoes in nearby shops.

⭐️⭐️

Reubens Cafe, Kosher Dairy (Baker Street)

Smooth but could likely do with adding a bit more matcha powder as it tasted a bit too milky. Extra points as you can be fairly certain an antisemite isn't going to spit in your beverage. Decent bagels too.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Coco di Mama (Victoria)

Overpriced, icier than Antarctica, and horrifically sweet-possibly discontinued, for good reason. Their pasta is similarly "meh". Somehow offensive to both Italy & Japan.

⭐️

Pret (lurking around every corner)

Made (a) warm & (b) using 🥥 milk (don’t ask me why) so you know it’s going to be terrible while you are ordering. You only have yourself to blame! Something 3 witches should be dancing around on a blasted heath in medieval Scotland.

⭐️

Starbucks

Often too powdery and they seem to use semi-skimmed SLOP instead of whole milk. But probably the most tolerable of all the mainstream chains.

⭐️⭐️

Farmer J (St James Park)

Dire and just shy of £5. Forgot to take a pic when I tried it but sent the below text to friend I was waiting for. Recall it tasting like perfume for some reason.

⭐️

Caffe Nero

Uhhh ok you got me. They don’t sell iced matchas…But they do sell iced pistachio lattes (which also have green stuff in them) and are probably the best High St coffee chain overall. Props to them for sticking at what they’re good at rather than jumping on a fad 🫶

The Hoarder Coffee (West Brompton)

Smooth & flavoursome (you can add vanilla or rose syrups as @fleurelizabeth has been known to). Most importantly they use unhomogenised whole milk from @theestatedairy 🇬🇧🤍 Don't take kids tho, as they sell coarse millennial cringe.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@FleurElizabeth @theestatedairy Lytte (North End Road, Fulham)

Ran by the friendliest woman on the planet. Also use @theestatedairy. Matcha is decent but definitely visit for the 6/5 stars rocket-fuel Balkan coffee if you stop by before midday 🥤🔥

⭐️⭐️⭐️

@FleurElizabeth @theestatedairy Change Please (Victoria)

Terrific view…
