Bangladesh has been seeking assistance from China to build an air base at the site in Lalmonirhat, which housed an airfield from the World War II era.
The project was unveiled in March 2025. triggering a caution for Indian defence forces, especially in the eastern sector.
It comes against the backdrop of repeated references by Bangladeshโs advisor Muhammad Yunus and his aides to the Northeast in different contexts.
The proposed air base at Rangpur division is barely 20 km from the Indian border.
More importantly, India's northeastern states will become highly vulnerable if Bangladesh allows other countries like China and Pakistan to use it.
Lalmonirhat airbase, close to India's 'Chicken's Neck' corridor, raises strategic concerns.
India has a strong military presence in the Northeast and the Siliguri corridor. Indian Armyโs Trishakti Corps is headquartered near Siliguri
The Hasimara air base in the corridor houses Rafale squadrons. Moreover, Lalmonihat air base is within Indiaโs artillery striking range.
What has raised concerns is that the air base may be used to monitor India military movements in a conflict scenario & also become a hub of intelligence gathering.
It is not clear as to what Dhaka has planned at the air base.
Defence ties between Dhaka and Beijing had been deepening under the new regime in Bangladesh.
China has been supplying vast volumes of weapons and extending cooperation in construction of military infrastructure in Bangladesh like it did in Pakistan
Bangladeshโs interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, in his recent speech in China, described Indiaโs northeastern states as โlandlocked region with no access to the ocean,โ sparked outrage & India imposed restrictions on imports from Bangladesh via land ports,
According to satellite imagery, China has built at least 22 villages & settlements over the past 8 years within territory that has traditionally been part of Bhutan, with 8 villages emerging in areas in proximity to the strategic Doklam plateau since 2020.
The eight villages in Bhutanโs western sector, close to Doklam, are all strategically located in a valley or a ridge overlooking a valley that China claims, and several are close to Chinese military outposts or bases.
China is trying to isolate India's 'Chicken Neck' & Northeastern states in every possible way
It is aiding Bangladesh in east & Pakistan in west by providing weapons& military Eqmt
