What happened in the West, I think, is that its consensus future -- open borders, one world, multiculturalism, the rule based system -- IOW the certitudes of 2000, have disappeared. Today we have a present but no future.
It died in 3 stages. First the Muslims didn't go along with it and we had the GWOT. Second in reaction the elites turned the consensus future into a Woke religion and the culturally Christian wouldn't go along with it and it sparked the global populist revolt.
Russia and China were like fungoid growths on this temporary efflorescence; growing fat off the global world while retaining the institutions of dictatorial Bolshevism. But when the global world which was their host started to come apart they too were gripped by crisis.
Today everyone seems to be talking about starting a new party, the alternative to the GOP and Dems, the Tories and Labour, the Social Democrats and the National Front but nobody seems able to say what this new party should aspire to because we can't think of a replacement future.
What are Karine Jean-Pierre, AOC or Greta Thunberg going to come up with but a mess of pottage? The reason it's so hard to come up with a new party is that for the first time in the modern era the future stopped being linear. We really can't imagine what's coming and we know it.
