Bernard is a saint

The King and Queen of Naples came to visit him. But what really consoled the Zouave was when unannounced, Pius IX entered his room to bless and encourage him! Before retiring, the Sovereign Pontiff laid his hand on the arm of his dear

wounded man and made the sign of the Cross: “My friend, may the Good Lord bless you as I bless you.” The first hopes of recovery vanishing, the doctor decided to amputate the arm.

Bernard suffered at the thought of having to leave his battery and Church service, but resigned himself. The operation did not bring any improvement. He confessed to one of the Hospitaller Sisters:

“The Good Lord has given me a large part of suffering in my life, I assure you, but I am not complaining about it.” He drew strength and courage from the frequent recitation of the Rosary.

A few days later, his condition worsened and, after receiving Extreme Unction, he surrendered his beautiful soul to God in feelings of submission, abandonment and perfect conformity to the divine will. He was 27 years old.

After the solemn funeral, Pius IX declared: “Bernard is a saint in Heaven!”
