Why We Picked Finland For Watching Northern Lights?

Because we wanted to be where the legends and fairytales were written – Santa Claus’ official home - Lapland🪄🎅

If chasing the Aurora is on your list – now is the time to start planning.

Here's your 7 day itinerary!🧵👇

We took our Lapland trip in the first week of January.

Day 1 – Arrive in Helsinki

✨Take a direct flight from Delhi to Helsinki (Finnair).

✨Rest and explore Helsinki’s stunning architecture, Christmas markets (if Dec), and the Oodi library.

✨Try traditional Finnish food at Savotta or Lappi Ravintola.

(You can leave for Rovaniemi on the same night by an overnight train - Santa Claus Express).

Day 2 – Fly to Rovaniemi (Lapland’s capital)

✨Pre-book winter gear rental (snowsuit, gloves, boots) – essential! ❄️

✨Explore Santa Claus Village – send a letter from Santa’s post office, meet the big man himself, and cross the Arctic Circle!

✨Evening: Visit Arktikum for the Northern Lights exhibition and local Sami culture insights.

Day 3 – Drive to Inari (Scenic Arctic Drive)

✨Rent a 4WD car and drive to Inari (approx. 4.5 hours). Make sure it’s fully winter-equipped. (Alternatively, you can take a bus from Rovaniemi to Inari).

✨En route: Spot reindeer, snow-covered forests, and frozen lakes.

✨Evening: Aurora hunting tour with trusted guides. Ours included a bonfire on a frozen lake with marshmallows and coffee as the lights danced above us. Magical!

Day 4 – Ice Bath, Sauna & Reindeer Magic

✨Head to Ivalo for a traditional Finnish sauna + ice bath experience. Nerve-wracking but so worth it!

✨Visit a reindeer farm – feed, interact, and learn about Sámi reindeer culture.
* Bonus*: If the skies are clear, you might catch the auroras again on your way back.

✨ Our Airbnb had the perfect view – we watched the spectacular northern light show from the warmth of our room! 🌌

Day 5 – Kakslauttanen Igloo Stay

✨Drive to Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort – the famous glass igloo village.

✨Explore the resort campus with reindeers, huskies, snow-covered pine forests.

✨Clear skies - Watch the auroras from bed through the igloo ceiling.
We had cloudy skies, so we enjoyed the snowfall cuddled in warmth from our bed. What an experience!

Day 6 – Back to Rovaniemi

✨Drive back to Rovaniemi.

✨Explore local shops, try Lappish cuisine, or visit the Snowman World for ice slides & sculptures.

Optional: Snowmobiling or husky sledding.

Day 7 – Fly back to Delhi via Helsinki

Rovaniemi → Helsinki → Delhi.

Memories: Infinite ❄️💫
