A proxy war between the US and China! 😱

Thailand, backed by the US, has launched aggressive military strikes on China-supported Cambodia over a historic Shiv Mandir.

Here’s the explosive truth behind this conflict! 🧵

The Preah Vihear Temple is a 1,000-year-old Shiv Mandir that lies at the center of a long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

This ancient temple, deeply connected to India’s heritage, is more than just a religious site... it’s a powerful symbol of national pride and geopolitical power.

Thailand, with a population of 72M and a $570B GDP, dwarfs Cambodia’s 17M people and $33B economy.

Thailand’s military, armed with a $6B defense budget and US-supplied F-16 jets, is hammering Cambodia, whose $600M defense budget is no match.

This is a classic underdog battle.

📌 What started it all?

A fight broke out near the temple, and a Cambodian soldier was killed.

In response, Cambodia fired back. But Thailand, with support from the U.S., hit back hard using F-16 jets and missiles.

So far, reports say 13 civilians and one Thai soldier have died. The border is now completely shut, and the situation is extremely tense.

📌 Why now?

This isn’t just about a temple. It’s a proxy war.

The US backs Thailand to counter China’s growing influence in Southeast Asia.

Cambodia, heavily supported by China and even trained by Pakistan’s military since 2019, is a key piece in Beijing’s regional chess game.

📌 China is deeply involved.

A 2024 BBC report warned that China might be building a permanent military base in Cambodia, calling it a “logistics hub” to avoid attention.

The U.S. sees this as a serious threat to peace in the region.

Cambodia, with its growing ties to China, is starting to look more like a country under Beijing’s control.

📌 The temple dispute isn’t something new.

Even though both countries share a strong Buddhist heritage.. they have been fighting over the Preah Vihear Temple for more than 100 years.

In 1962, the International Court of Justice gave the temple to Cambodia, but many in Thailand still believe it belongs to them.

National pride keeps the conflict going.

📌 From India’s view, this conflict is a wake-up call.

The ancient Hindu temple, created with help from Indian architects, is a shared cultural treasure. But now, it’s caught in a bigger US-China power fight.

Can India help calm things down?

📌 The stakes are sky-high.

If Thailand seizes the temple area or Cambodia’s coastal regions, it could reshape Southeast Asia’s balance of power.

China might step in to protect Cambodia. This could quickly turn into a bigger regional war.

📌 The world is watching.

Both countries have recalled ambassadors, and borders are shut.

A formal declaration of war looms like a ticking time bomb.

The US and China are pulling the strings, and the outcome will dictate who dominates Southeast Asia for decades.

Here's My take...

👉 Cambodia’s economy and military are no match for Thailand’s might, let alone US backing.
👉 China’s support may embolden them, but it’s a trap.

This conflict could redraw maps and redefine alliances.

Stay tuned... this is far from over.
