This is Colombia:
• $1 cappuccinos
•High-speed internet
•Digital nomad visa & hubs
It used to be known for cartels and chaos. Now it’s a hotspot for creatives and remote workers.
Here are 8 reasons why Colombia should be on your radar: 🧵
1/ Amazing food
Fresh tropical fruit. $3 arepas. World-class coffee on every corner. Michelin star restaurants. You name it.
And Rappi (Colombia’s food delivery service) is 10x better than Uber Eats and Doordash.
Groceries, pharmacy, takeout delivered with quality in minutes.
2/ Dancing that builds confidence
The first time I danced salsa at Punta y Taco, I was terrified.
But Salsa is how people in Colombia connect and release tension.
Salsa helps you build your self-confidence.
If you feel stuck, dance.
3/ Rest is a priority
Colombia has 18 public holidays a year (most I've ever seen).
People take time to rest. They spend quality time with their family.
It made me question the guilt I carry every time I take time off from work.
Rest isn't a luxury. You deserve it.
4/ Drinking coffee is a sacred moment
I've always loved coffee. But in Colombia, it became a ritual.
The smell, the pour, the pause.
You don't drink coffee there, you experience it.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down enough to enjoy your coffee.
5/ Time zone
• Syncs with U.S. Eastern & Central Time
• Same workday as NYC, Austin, Miami
You can run meetings, send deliverables, and still have your evenings free.
Colombia is ideal for remote workers serving the Americas.
6/ Great infrastructure
• $40 flights between cities
• Modern metro in Medellín
• High-speed internet even in small towns
It’s a country built for movement, connection, and remote work.
7/ Hidden talent & innovation
Medellín and Bogotá are buzzing with:
• Startup founders
• Software engineers
• Creative freelancers
This is how ecosystems grow.
When I lived there, I went to many events alone and left with an expanded network.
I had tons of conversations in cafés that sparked entire projects.
I even bumped into the systems guy, @matt_gray_
No pitch decks. No small talk. Just presence and serendipity.
@matt_gray_ 8/ Nature resets your nervous system
In Colombia, I hiked to feel whole again.
If you’re feeling lost, burnt out, or disconnected:
You don’t need another strategy.
You need stillness and the courage to listen.
@matt_gray_ Downsides to consider:
• Income inequality is high. Many locals struggle to make ends meet
• Bureaucracy can be slow and inefficient, especially for visas and permits
• Power or water outages happen occasionally, even in major cities.
@matt_gray_ Still, Colombia balances its struggles and potential better than most places.
Before Colombia, I felt stuck.
Living there exposed me to new ideas, new people, new ways of thinking.
Then one habit gave me purpose and income…
@matt_gray_ I started writing in Colombia, and it saved me.
No niche. No audience. Just my truth.
Purpose and income were a byproduct of my self-expression.
@matt_gray_ If you’re stuck, numb, or disconnected…
You don’t always need another strategy.
You might just need a different rhythm and the courage to change environments that no longer suit your nervous system.
@matt_gray_ Are you living in an environment that suits your nervous system?
What country is that?
Let me know in the comments.
