THE WEAPONIZATION OF THE JUDICIARY ACROSS THE WORLD — A THREAD

Across the world, leaders and opposition figures alike are accusing those in power of using the courts as political weapons.

From Imran Khan in Pakistan to Trump in the U.S., from Brazil to Venezuela, the charge is the same: justice turned into a tool of politics.

Let’s break it down 👇🧵

1. 🇵🇰 IMRAN KHAN: FROM PRIME MINISTER TO POLITICAL PRISONER

Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former PM, has faced over 150 cases since his 2022 ouster. Charges range from corruption to “terrorism,” even an “un-Islamic” marriage, which alone earned him 7 years in jail.

After the 26th Amendment (Oct 2024), the govt gained the power to handpick judges. Since then, Khan’s fate has been sealed in closed-door trials, denied bail, and rushed convictions, all timed to crush PTI before the 2026 elections.

Now under General Asim Munir’s “Asim Law”, the crackdown has expanded to his entire family:

Imran Khan - imprisoned over 2 years.

Bushra Bibi (wife) - jailed nearly as long.

Sisters - dragged through fabricated cases.

Nephews - tried in military courts, abducted from homes and cars.

This is not justice. It’s collective punishment.

It's a warning from a decadent system: your family is fair game if you dissent.

Instead of breaking Khan, the state has turned him into a symbol of persecution, and his family into martyrs of a system that has weaponized the courts for political retribution.

2. 🇺🇸 TRUMP: THE LAWFARE CAMPAIGN TO DERAIL 2024

Across the ocean, America’s 45th and current president faced his own political trial by fire.

Trump has been hit with 70+ charges: business records, classified documents, and election interference. Every indictment timed to collide with his 2024 run.

A judiciary hijacked to stop MAGA at the ballot box.

New York conviction (May 2024): prosecutors used a novel, untested legal theory to secure a guilty verdict.

Documents case: tossed by the court for DOJ overreach, confirming how shaky the charges are.

Judges like Juan Merchan slapped Trump with gag orders while ignoring conflicts of interest.

It’s clear: the Biden DOJ and Democrat-aligned judges were waging a coordinated witch hunt.

For Biden’s team, it was “justice.”

But the effect is the same: America’s choice in 2024 was almost decided in courtrooms, not polling stations.

3. 🇧🇷 BOLSONARO: BRAZIL’S SUPREME COURT TURNED INTO A POLITICAL HIT SQUAD

In Brazil, the weaponization of the judiciary has taken a brazen form.

Former president Jair Bolsonaro is being crushed by Justice de Moraes, who’s turned the Supreme Court into a “judicial mafia.”

Charged with plotting a “coup” after losing in 2022.

Slapped with ankle monitors, social media bans, and even house arrest.

Allies censored, jailed, or silenced - no trial, no due process.

Leaked “Vaza Toga” documents exposed Moraes’ behind-the-scenes role in censoring critics and weaponizing the courts.

Even the U.S. sanctioned Moraes in July 2025 for authoritarian overreach, while Lula’s government defends it all as “protecting democracy.”

The same Lula who says that "Democracy is relative," so go figure out what kind of protection he's talking about.

The reality? It’s protecting their grip on power.

Once again: the ballot box is being replaced by the courtroom.

4. 🇮🇳 INDIA: JUDICIARY DEPLOYED TO BREAK AAP

In the world’s largest democracy, the courts are being bent into tools of political warfare.

The target: Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Senior leader Satyendar Jain was locked up for over two years on “corruption” charges.

In 2025, the CBI admitted they had no evidence.

Yet Jain faced endless trial delays, repeated denial of bail, and courts that ignored exculpatory proof.

Critics call it what it is: a BJP plot to dismantle Delhi’s AAP government by sidelining its leadership through lawfare.

The BJP’s defense? “Fighting corruption.”

The reality? Weaponizing the judiciary to crush rivals and cling to power.

5. 🇹🇷 TURKEY: ERDOĞAN’S COURTS CRUSH OPPOSITION

If you want a textbook case of judicial state capture, look no further than Turkey under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

After the 2016 coup attempt, over 4,000 judges and prosecutors were sacked or jailed, replaced with regime loyalists.

Selahattin Demirtaş, leader of the pro-Kurdish HDP, has been detained since 2016 on endless “terrorism” charges, even after the European Court of Human Rights ordered his release.

Freedom House’s 2025 report ranks Turkey among the worst offenders for weaponized courts, noting judges themselves risk arrest if they rule against Erdoğan’s interests.

The state’s excuse? “National security.”

The reality? Silencing Kurds, jailing critics, and again, crushing dissent.

6. 🇲🇲 MYANMAR: JUNTA’S COURTS CRUSH DEMOCRACY

Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar’s military rulers (known as a junta, meaning a government run by generals) have turned the courts into a weapon against democracy.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the nation’s ousted civilian leader, has been buried under 27 years in prison on absurd charges like “illegal walkie-talkie possession” and “electoral fraud.”

Freedom House’s 2025 brief notes that judges operate directly under military orders, with secret trials, no due process, and no access to defense.

Thousands of activists face the same fate in what critics call a “kangaroo court system.”

The junta’s line? “Restoring order.”

The reality? Restoring dictatorship through lawfare and sham trials.

7. 🇷🇴 ROMANIA: COURTS CANCEL OUTSIDER’S RISE

In Dec 2024, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election after outsider Călin Georgescu shocked elites by winning 23% of the vote.

He was later barred from running on vague charges of “incitement” and links to fascist groups, with officials blaming alleged Russian meddling.

Observers say it mirrors Imran Khan in Pakistan and Trump in the U.S., courts stepping in to kill political momentum, not to uphold justice.

The outcome? A tainted rerun in May 2025, protests across the country, and growing fears of executive meddling in the judiciary.

8. 🇻🇪 WE'RE IN THE ENDGAME NOW: VENEZUELA, MADURO’S JUDICIAL DICTATORSHIP

If Pakistan, the U.S., and Brazil show creeping lawfare, Venezuela is the full-blown endgame.

Under Nicolás Maduro, the judiciary has been transformed into a goon squad in robes.

María Corina Machado, the opposition’s brightest hope, was banned from the 2024 election on flimsy “corruption” charges — after winning 93% in a primary.

2,000+ activists, journalists, and dissidents rot in prison, no trials, no evidence.

Human Rights Watch confirms: judges are nothing more than Maduro’s puppets.

The regime’s excuse? “Protecting the revolution.”

The truth? Protecting a tyrant who steals elections and crushes hope before it reaches the ballot box.
