🧵🇺🇸 #VoiceofAmericaSilenced: I'm struggling with my sadness and anger over the dismantling of our beloved Voice of America. I worked with the USIA in the 80s, alongside Susan Eisenhower, Ike’s granddaughter. VOA was a pillar of information, hope, and democracy for the world. 💔

2/ VOA was a key tool to inform ordinary Soviets and other repressed people of the dangers of communism and totalitarianism. It helped us join their fights for freedom, serving as the antithesis of the Kremlin's Pravda ☭, which spreads propaganda and lies to "useful idiots".

3/ The irony is that a lying election denier, Kari Lake, is at the center of dismantling America's voice, @VOANews. Callous actions to silence criticism have now led to a subpoena for a deposition. She'll have to answer for this. Story by @ronaldjhansen: azcentral.com/story/news/pol…

4/ Dismantling Voice of America was an act of profound ignorance. Lifelong Republican Susan Eisenhower was 1st to endorse a Democrat in 2008—an example of bipartisan spirit that defined our foreign policy. A spirit that is now gone, replaced by reckless disregard for our history.

/5 #SaveVOA: VOA is not a news outlet; it's a US foreign policy tool that helped bring down an empire without firing a shot. Discarding it now, especially with the resurgence of Russia, is a tragedy. 🇺🇸 @BarryMarkson1 @stephen_richer @tomryanlaw @ThomasGalvin @W7VOA @JenAFifield

@BarryMarkson1 @stephen_richer @tomryanlaw @ThomasGalvin @W7VOA @JenAFifield 6/ Please read @TedLipien's article about our Voice of America: "80 Years of VOA: Different Names of the Voice of America": coldwarradiomuseum.com/80-years-of-vo… VOA changed the world, promoting democracy. Below: Letter to the Polish people (it was DANGEROUS to listen to VOA) and Eisenhower.

@BarryMarkson1 @stephen_richer @tomryanlaw @ThomasGalvin @W7VOA @JenAFifield @TedLipien 7/ The rich, eighty-two-year history of the Voice of America is a source of pride for many Americans. It exemplifies the concept of "American Exceptionalism." Unfortunately, some individuals, like @KariLake, overlook our historical treasures like VOA and seek to undermine them.

@BarryMarkson1 @stephen_richer @tomryanlaw @ThomasGalvin @W7VOA @JenAFifield @TedLipien @KariLake 8/ #DontSilenceTheVoiceOfAmerica: Please share this story. @VOANews has been exceptional for America. Redefining editorial content is one thing; eliminating it is outrageous. We need to reach people's hearts and minds to reverse this decision. 🇺🇸 End. @threadreaderapp unroll
