The Tartaria Tablets in Romania πͺ
Hidden in Transylvania's heart lies a mystery that rewrites history. The Tartaria Tablets were discovered in 1961 in a Neolithic site near Alba Iulia. Three small clay tablets with a monumental impact.
Dating back to c. 5300 BC the tablets bear incised symbols linked to VinΔa culture and they may predate Sumerian cuneiform by nearly 2000 years. Their meaning remains undeciphered.

Unearthed by archeologist Nucolae Vlassa alongside clay figurines, a shell bracelet and even human bones. Proto-writing? Symbolic code?
Thanks to @KArusich for the inspiration.
The symbols on the tablets resemble crosses, animals, spirals and abstract signs. Who knows the meaning? The Tartaria Tablets challenge everything we thought we knew about the birth of writing.
