🧵NEW from @pewresearch:

The American public’s attitudes toward both the Israeli people and government have turned more negative in the past few years.

Views of the Palestinian people, the PA and Hamas have held fairly steady, according to a new poll.

But shockingly... 👇
1/

Views of the Israeli people and Israeli government have turned more negative among both Rs and Ds in recent years.

Opinions of the Palestinian people have also diverged. Ds’ views have stayed fairly constant, while Rs’ have become more negative.

But the most shocking part?
2/

The youngest Democrats are slightly more likely to view Hamas than the Israeli government favorably!

The opposite is true among older Democrats. However, Democrats of all ages have slightly more positive views of the Palestinian Authority than of the Israeli government.

And perhaps even more concerningly...
/3

44% of Muslim Americans surveyed view Hamas favorably.

Almost half support an organization whose founding charter explicitly calls for the genocide of Jews, and which less than three years ago massacred 1,200 people in the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust.

We can't begin to solve our issues if we can't agree on what people believe.

There's a lot of noise out there and it's important to look at the data instead of what politicians or media figures are trying to feed you.

There's a lot to think about from these results.

5/

One thing that jumped out at me is that views of Hamas and the PA seem largely disconnected from views of the Palestinian people.

On the other hand, as views of the Israeli government become more negative, views of Israelis tend to become more negative too.

6/

Why is that?

One of the central goals of the pro-Palestine movement has been to blur the line between the Israeli government and ordinary Israelis, treating them as collectively responsible for their government's actions.

No other country in the world is treated like that.

7/

I think many of the same people would argue that they shouldn't be judged by the actions of a president they consider a fascist.

But once you realize that "Israelis" often functions as a stand-in for "Jews," it becomes easier to understand.

8/

Here's the full poll.

I encourage you to read it yourself.

Lots to ruminate on, no matter where you stand on this issue.
