We always think the evil eye (’ayn) is just someone being jealous of your new car or job.
It isn’t.
It’s far more serious than most people realize.
The Prophet ﷺ revealed a reality about the evil eye that every Muslim should know.
He ﷺ said:
“The evil eye is true, and if anything could precede the divine decree, it would be the evil eye.”
(Sahih Muslim 2188)
This doesn’t mean the evil eye overrides Allah’s decree. Nothing can. Rather, it emphasizes how serious and powerful its effects can be, all within Allah’s perfect decree.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“The evil eye puts a man into the grave and a camel into the cooking pot.”
(Authenticated by al-Albani in al-Silsilah al-Sahihah, 1249)
The believer doesn’t live in fear.
The believer lives with tawakkul while taking the means that Allah and His Messenger ﷺ taught.
One of those means is the du’a the Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn
A’ūdhu bi-kalimātillāhi at-tāmmati min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ’aynin lāmmah.
“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous creature, and every harmful evil eye.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)
Protect yourself with your morning and evening adhkār.
Thank Allah for His blessings.
When you admire someone’s blessing, say “Allahumma bārik lahu/lahā” or “Mā shā’ Allāh, tabārakallāh.”
Your blessings are a trust from Allah.
Protect them with remembrance, gratitude, and reliance upon Him.
