Might reflect a cultural shift in the symbolism of physical books. Earlier message of having many books was that one was likely well read & educated. (Or sought such an appearance.)
Now, physical books are not the main way of passing along lots of information.
So having many physical books now can be seen as clutter by some. Maybe a sign one is old fashioned, out of step with the times. “OK, Boomer… time for the meds & bed.”)
Musing further…
Books also imply a permanence of their information & knowledge contained. Today, knowledge is seen as fluid, in constant flux. Wisdom is not seen as eternal but quite changeable.
E-content is volatile, changeable, and prone to centralised modification & deletion.
Reflections of a trend towards a post-literate world.
