Why my fellow Jewish women need to take a seat when it comes to the #MarchForBlackWomen taking place on Yom Kippur : A Thread.

In Judaism, there is a concept called pikuach nefesh. This roughly translates to "saving a life."

Yom Kippur is our holiest day. A day of fasting. Pikuach Nefesh dictates that the ill can not fast, lest it impair their recovery.

Surely we can all recognize that the lives of people of color in our country are in clear and present danger.

The March For Black Women moves our sisters towards recovery. As we, the Jewish people, know well – racism and xenophobia cost lives.

On Yom Kippur, go to temple if you must, but don't prevent others from making their own choice.

Pekuah nefesh, our greatest mitzvah and guiding principle, requires you to step back and look at the bigger picture.

And need I remind you, “Neither shall you stand by the blood of your neighbor.” Thank you. /end thread.
