AARP is ready to protect older Americans from any unfair proposals that would raise taxes or threaten their retirement security. <THREAD>
We're pleased the House #TaxReform bill does not change 401(k)s and hinder hard-working Americans' ability to save for retirement.
However, we strongly oppose repealing the medical expense deduction. This change will impose a Health Tax on the oldest & sickest Americans.
No one should face a large tax increase simply because they have high medical costs. But that's what the #HealthTax does.
8.6 million Americans count on this deduction for much-needed relief from high health care costs. A tax hike is the last thing they need.
Older Americans shouldn't pay the price for tax reform. We encourage Congress to drop the Health Tax from consideration.
We urge Congress to work together on bipartisan, commonsense solutions that make the tax code fair for ALL Americans.
The tax system should also produce sufficient revenue to pay for priorities like Medicare and Medicaid, and to maintain fiscal stability.
As #TaxReform advances, AARP will be watching to ensure changes do not hurt older taxpayers or threaten retirement security. <END THREAD>
