Every day, 96 Americans are killed by gun violence, and on average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides every year. Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with guns than people in other developed countries.
I recently signed the proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Portland, and I encourage all citizens to support their local communities on efforts to prevent gun violence.
Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to Wear Orange on June 1st, the first Friday in June in 2018, to help raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors. #WearOrange Image

I am authorizing the Portland Police to use all lawful means to end the illegal occupation on North Mississippi Avenue and to hold those violating our community’s laws accountable. There will be no autonomous zone in Portland.
We all agree many of our nation’s systems and structures are fundamentally racist and require significant reform. There’s a housing crisis, a health care crisis, an education crisis, an employment crisis, a mental health crisis, and an addiction crisis.
All of these crises are magnified in urban areas, including Portland. And, these crises disproportionately impact Black people.

The Portland Police Bureau today announced it will assign every officer a three-digit number and require that the number be prominently displayed on officers' helmets during crowd management events.
The Police Bureau also said it has assigned five officers alternative duties outside of crowd management response while investigations occur based upon concerns reported by members of the public.
When the Bureau is aware of these concerns or is aware of an incident where policy may have been violated, cases are referred to the Independent Police Review (IPR) and Professional Standards Division (PSD).

Taking action to prevent climate change is one of the City’s top priorities. We are in a climate crisis, and we must all do our part to protect our environment. Here are some of the actions we’ve taken that I’m particularly proud of.
We adopted the 100% Renewables Resolution, committing the City of Portland to meet 100 percent of community-wide energy needs with renewable energy by 2050.
We joined the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge to accelerate Portland’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the buildings and transportation sectors, the two largest sources of local carbon emissions.

While many of our firefighters are on the road helping other communities, Portland is still being protected. All 31 Portland Fire & Rescue stations are staffed 24/7 and our firefighters are trained to fight wildfires. Image
But we are all stretched thin. The best way to fight a fire is to not start a fire. Here is what PF&R suggests we do during this vulnerable time:

• Do not BBQ or create outdoor fires during this dangerous period.
• Make sure cigarette butts are extinguished fully in a non-combustible ashtray.
• Avoid using any machinery that creates sparks outside.
• If you live next to a natural area, you should provide firefighters with the defensible space they need to protect your home.

I joined @MayorJenny , @MayorBowser , & @NYCMayor to issue this joint statement in response to President Donald Trump threatening to revoke federal funding from cities.
“Our cities, and the millions of Americans who we represent, are not President Trump’s political pawns. We are confronting unprecedented challenges—fighting back a pandemic and economic devastation without another stimulus.
Now, instead of leadership from the White House, we are faced with new attacks that are unlawful, unconstitutional and will be undoubtedly defeated in court.
