This thread is incredible. Please read it.

I want to share a personal example of something that is brought up in the thread: the subject of ineffective policing and how that affects the community.
The story takes place in South Central. As most of y’all know, I grew up in South Los Angeles. Hawthorne, specifically. A majority minority, working class comm. South Central was about 10 min East via side streets and the beach abt 10 minutes west.
Anyway, my friends and I played soccer during the summers we were all in college. We ended up going out to dinner afterwards and on one particular night we all wanted to have Roscoe’s. The only location that was open that late was the South Central spot - it was midnight ish.
Yes, we’re a wild bunch: soccer and late night food runs lmao.

We drove out there and when we arrived, there was a man seated on the landing outside of the restaurant with his hands behind his back and threw Roscoe’s kitchen staff standing around him.
When we walked in, we asked our waitress what was going on. She indicated that the gentleman had been seen breaking into a car and the kitchen staff stopped him, made a citizen’s arrest, and were now waiting for the cops. We were blown away and then went to eating.
We ate a lot. This is an important note because we were there for at least an hour and a half. In fact, at one point, the waitress came by and offered us some free chicken cause they had to toss some and make room for a fresh batch. Of course we took it lol.
Anyway, we were getting ready to leave and, I kid you not, *that* was when the cops showed up. Something like 2+ hours after the incident. And, yes, I got that it wasn’t an emergency at this point but it made me reflect on what that must mean to ppl that live there.
To know that response times are poor, that the police often are antagonistic to residents, and even when they do the job of police in their communities, it’d take nearly 3 hrs for them to get there. It’d tell me, as a resident, that the police can’t be counted on.
And that kind of anecdote isn’t new - it’s something I’ve heard from people in communities like Hawthorne, Inglewood, Watts, and Compton. The break down of community trust towards the police is real. And what that means is that police in these comms are more like an occupying
force and less like a community protector. Which is kind of the point, right? People that live in these communities care deeply about safety. And it’s a wild implication thrown out w the “what about black on black crime” thing that ppl in the community don’t care abt peace and
safety. It’s a constant worry cause no one wants to end up being harmed or robbed or anything. But it’s also a false thing cause of stories like the actions of that kitchen staff: looking out for their community and stopping the bad guys.
Which is all to say: stop mischaracterizing poor black and brown communities as lawless in ways that are somehow just rooted in those communities. Instead, think of what it’s like to live in a community where the police antagonize you and are liable to treat you in ways that harm
Law enforcement should be invested in building community trust and yet far too much of the rhetoric from LEOs as it relates to communities of color. And they do it by conflating criminality w these ppl as if they were inevitable. Look at the CA Sheriffs and SB 54, for ex.
Anyway, I’d love to see LEOs see the ppl that live in these comms as full people w dreams and hopes and fears. So many of them identical to the folks in the suburbs w better relationships w LEOs. Prob because the LEOs see *their* full humanity and don’t conceptualize the suburbs
as a criminal war zone to be controlled as much as a community to be protected. Anyway, that’s my personal story about Roscoe’s and a citizen’s arrest.
