So excited to spend my afternoon at the #TransHealthLeeds book launch! First up: what is dysphoria, with Zowie Davy and Michael Toze
"I hope there's not many psychiatrists in the room, because you're going to get bad press today" 😂
Language in trans medicine becomes "a truism without substance" and is used to exert control over trans people and their transition
Does the new diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria in the #DSM5 mean that many trans people do not fall under this diagnosis after receiving suitable treatment? I'd love to learn about this from someone in the field!
Does anyone else see *minor issues* with these selection criteria? ;) Excellent examples! #TransHealthLeeds
Next speaker: Chris Dietz on the contrast between Danish gender self-declaration legislation and very strict medical gatekeeping (which has interesting parallels with the Dutch system that recent begrudgingly recognised a non-binary gender but has shocking obstacles)
Such interesting parallels between trans ppl being kept out of legislative decision making on laws that would affect their lives, and the way I've seen this happen with sex work legislation in my research #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
Love this debate on the intricacies of UK marriage legislation and the benefits and risks of X gender passports #TransHealthLeeds has turned into #TransLawLeeds :)
On the topic of #TransHealthLeeds / #TransLawLeeds, a summary of the Westminster Social Policy Forum on trans rights: m.facebook.com/story.php?stor…
Third, Kate Nambiar from Clinic T in Brighton - on trans-led healthcare. Starting with a history lesson on misogyny and transphobia in medicine (including towards fellow doctors)
I have never heard a healthcare professional speak so respectfully and knowledgeably about sex work and sexual health <3
Kate stresses the importance of all levels of service creation being led by and involving trans people, from research to implementation. Again: #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
Finally we get to hear from Ruth Pearce on her book Trans Health: Discourse, Power and Possibility #TransHealthLeeds
"By the time I got to a gender clinic I was already an expert of myself" <3
Hell yeah foucauldian discourse analysis! "Discourse of trans as transition"
And in contrast to that: trans as movement, and trans as condition. #TransHealthLeeds
Activist-experts have been central in movements for HIV treatment, IVF, and groups like Action for Trans Health - and of course academics who study a topic that affects them #TransHealthLeeds
Insider-providers build services for their community from the ground up - with a shout out to the amazing @OpenBarbers!
The cost of being an expert in a field that affects you: being the only person in the room who knows what it feels like. This can be traumatic #TransHealthLeeds
Care for your community often comes before doing your research - and this affects your ability to work as an expert #precarity #marginalisation #austerity #TransHealthLeeds
I'm so glad I managed to make it to the #TransHealthLeeds, what an incredibly inspiring, interdisciplinary, encouraging, and touching event. I can't wait to read the book!
The book launch this thread was about, by the way, was got this book (I can't wait to read it!): policypress.co.uk/understanding-…
