For those struck by the fascist resonances of Jeff Sessions' citation of scripture to justify breaking up families, remember that he is associated with The Fellowship, which hosts the National Prayer Breakfast. The Fellowship embodies a strange Christianity. For example...
Here is longtime Fellowship head Douglas Coe, preaching that Jesus taught his followers to be as dedicated as Chairman Mao's Red Guards who were willing to cut off the heads of their own parents for the good of the state.
Back when this video came out, I thought to myself, "that's really weird and sinister. But how eccentric is Coe's teaching, really?" So I started a research folder with examples of other evangelical leaders teaching similar things...
The next thing I came across was "Purpose Driven Life" book author Rick Warren teaching EXACTLY the same thing as Coe... before a stadium crowd of thousand of his followers.
Rick Warren, as it happens, is - along with Jeff Sessions - another Fellowship insider. I assume he got the teaching from Coe. Warren teaches that Christians should be as dedicated to Jesus as Hitler Youth were to Hitler.
The authoritarian, even fascist, utility of such doctrine is striking - if Christians should be as dedicated to "Jesus" as the Hitler Youth were to Hitler... well, who is "Jesus" really ? In practice, "Jesus" means whatever one's pastor says.
So, this teaches believers to be blindly devoted to "X", and lets their pastors or chosen authority figures define what "X" means, or entails.

It's fascism.
