I regularly worked 400 hours a month as a lawyer. (That's ~13 hours/day x 30 days/month.) The firm I worked at prided itself on being "leanly staffed." That meant fewer lawyers on a project--but not fewer hours on a project, which meant many more hours per lawyer. 1/
On one project, when the partner and associate took July 4 weekend off, I ended up negotiating against 3 partners, 2 mid-level associates, and 2 junior-level associates. I worked 2 all-nighters in a row twice for that project. I don't think the client ever called me by name. 2/
I do not remember what I learned except how to focus on core issues and separately how to focus mentally for long periods of time, how to close, and how to push through. Helpful, but not worth the hours spent learning about and then drafting terms like original issue discount 3/
My body learned how to turn stress into cysts. I had to cut out caffeine. I do not recommend being a lawyer to anyone who asks, unless you really love the documents 4/
I can tell you about my similar work hours in tech, which I switched to in 1998. I ended up with one of the worst cases of stage 4 endometriosis my doctor had ever seen. I had a miscarriage 5/
I regret staying at a VC firm that worked me that hard without ever giving me a shot; I had no chance at MP or of building a real track record. I regret not taking my full maternity leave. I regret not getting regular physicals, skipping meals, texting/emailing while driving 6/
There has to be a better way 7/7
