Really enjoyed giving the keynote talk this morning at #DigitalScotland18 hosted by @FutureScot_News. Here's a brief precis in case you missed it [thread]
Research from @doteveryoneuk shows half of people say the internet has made life a lot better for them personally, but only one in ten see a very positive impact on society. Clearly something's not quite right
Tech is throwing up some really difficult questions, but it also has real potential to enable a better society. Right now, the negatives mean there is huge political pressure to do something -- but it's not always clear what. This is a symptom of a bigger problem
The distinction that matters in politics today isn't traditional left vs right, but open vs closed. Layer attitudes to tech on top and it's clear we need to raise our ambitions on the things that matter to people: tech for radical improvements in health, education, transport etc.
The technology to achieve much of this is already a reality, and is advancing all the time. In fields as diverse as logistics, finance and medicine, AI tools enable significant improvements. See deepindex.org for more
The big consumer internet companies have become a fixture of modern life. It's clear we need to rethink law and regs to cope with new business models and incentives. On execution of course you can't copy-paste to the public sector - gov is different - but they have raised the bar
This matters: if public services don't keep pace the gap between our experience as consumers and as citizens could get stretched to breaking point. This is is a big problem for civic engagement / participation. For more on the tech view see stratechery.com/2018/divine-di…
We ought to be optimistic about tech: ambitious about accessing its potential to transform the things people care about, and mindful of dealing with the costs of change. Here are three big priorities for politicians, policymakers, tech executives and civil society to engage with
