you know

you're all outraged about how the US treats immigrants

so let's talk about how the EU treats immigrants.

we've had an ongoing crisis for years with refugees crossing the Mediterranean in unseaworthy boats because the EU has made all safe routes impossible.
there's a lot to say about how the Libyan coast guard treats migrants, how they're often jailed in horriffic places, abused, extorted and enslaved.

once they're on the ocean, the only way for these people to not die is when they're picked up by one of the rescue boats.
yes, there's several boats operated by NGOs in the Mediterranean whose only task is to prevent people drowning because the EU is not giving refugees any other way to enter.
the EU & its member countries try to make these rescue operations impossible on a regular basis.

without offering alternatives of course.

they want these people to drown.

dead people can't immigrate.
the newest development is that Italian harbours no longer let the rescue boats dock, or any boats that have rescued refugees on board, not even commercial freighters.

one boat is stuck 24 NM off the coast, low on fuel, overcrowded, and with a storm coming up. People will die.
so I'm just saying.

the US got a lot of attention for how horribly they're treating refugees.

we kinda need your attention for the EU's actions too. without international pressure, the EU will only keep making this situation worse.
@MSF_Sea, @openarms_fund and @seawatchcrew are just a few organisations involved in the ongoing rescue operations.

this has been going on for YEARS. whenever a few hundred people drown, there's some media attention for the "tragedy" and then it's forgotten again.
correction: it was both Italy and Spain who refused to let the boats dock. I'm currently trying to find info on if anything has changed in the meantime

nope. there's "talks" of possibly letting the ship dock in Malta. no change so far.

The #Lifeline got permission to dock in Malta!

but there's no plan yet what will happen to the rescued people on the boat.

This crisis has been resolved, but the bigger one is still ongoing.

The rescue boats have stayed in the harbours for the last few days because they're afraid they won't be able to dock when they have rescued refugees on board.

How many people have drowned in the meantime?
I wonder how many people die in that ocean that we never hear about. That just get lost. An empty, overturned boat washing up somewhere. It breaks my heart.

This is a completely artificial crisis. It's been intentionally created.
more than 35,000 people have died trying to reach safety in the EU.

wow shit. they didn't get permission at all. the #Lifeline is still stuck in the open ocean

100 people died.

we've gotten so used to people drowning in the Mediterranean that major news agencies barely mention it.

these 100 people will never even get a hashtag, nor will we know their identities. they're nameless casualties of inhuman politics.

now they've grounded an NGO operated aircraft the function of which is to fly over the ocean to find boats in distress. they're not letting the plane launch.

which means more people are going to die.

and that's in the middle of making plans to build concentration camps for refugees.
500 people have drowned in the last 2 weeks, and that's just the ones we know about.

the plane can't get clearance to fly over the ocean. the boats aren't allowed to leave. there's plans to start criminal trials against the operators of the boats.

for rescuing drowning people.
