I've had two conversations today with activists and it's got me thinking.

One is seasoned, been at this a while. Another is just deciding whether to make the leap, to throw their lot in with the people who're risking everything they've ever loved for what they think is right.
Without giving these people away, as these conversations were private, I can tell you that both have already made pretty major sacrifices for what they believe in, and that you should be grateful that each of them exist, for the impact they have had on the world.
The common theme of both conversations was grim resignation and how to keep working from a place without anything so lovely as hope to hold to.

"most people who've ever done anything truly valuable have been driven quite mad by it," I said, thinking of isolation mostly
"anyone on the front lines will be so traumatized it will absolutely impact their families. You can't do this work and not suffer from seeing that much unfiltered anguish with no way to help it," I told the one thinking they wanted to make a bigger difference
The old hand, to paraphrase, told me they had this fight left in them. The new one said they couldn't unsee the thing that made them need to fight.

When I say I love us I mean the people who push past reason and exhaustion out of sheer determination to at least slow this down.
If today you are feeling exhausted and alone I will just say that it's perfectly natural. Make it through today. This is gaslighting on a breathtaking scale; you will sometimes be confused and afraid. You will doubt your eyes and your intuition.

But you're not alone.
If today you could take five of the bastards in either solo combat or Lincoln-Douglas debate as they chose, remember this feeling and savor it because it comes and goes and you'll want to remind yourself of this later. And thank you, for your fire today.
Tomorrow is July 4. You'll see a lot of posts and articles about how you should be less of an asshole with your firecrackers because it frightens people's pets.

You will see fewer reminders that a lot of people also don't like seeing smoke enveloping city streets at night.
I wonder how many more people will understand why that is by this time next year.
*note: I take the critique that my date is off by six hours. I've been listening to firecrackers for days because the holiday is midweek so nobody can agree which weekend to use their celebratory munitions. Let us presume the point stands, God bless your calendar-reading hearts
*finally gets around to resetting phone to show time and date both
