Going to thread this just a little: an argument in eco-political theory, building on After Nature:

/ There is a "human nature"--at least in this age--which is to make our own nature by building the world in which we act, that gives shape to our powers & relationships.
/ The build world overwhelms and empowers use: 900 tons of infrastructure for every person in the world. Without it most of us would not survive. Most of us move, communicate, cooperate, stay alive, only through it.
/ But it is a kind of Leviathan. It guides and directs us--to move, to share your words, to eat, use these rare earths, burn these fuels, move along these roads. It is the shape of our lives.
/ It is the greatest empowerment in history. And its shape is deepening inequality. And its direction is ecological catastrophe.
/ The question is whether there is a way to make it politically accountable, to give it a deliberate shape, and free and egalitarian terms. If we could, we would be shaping ourselves and one another.
/ I had the extraordinary gift of discussing these over-bold claims and the perplexities they produce with @katforrester a few months ago, and now here they are.
