I’m seeing some chatter on whether anti-zionism is anti-semitism.

It is. Here’s why:
Anti-Zionists will claim that they are merely critics of Israeli policy and how it affects Palestinians, which would be fine if it ended there. However, anti-Zionism by definition is the opposition of the state of Israel and its right to exist with Jewish character. 1/
If you’re okay with Palestine being a Muslim state but not okay with Israel being a Jewish state you’re elevating antisemitism into political discourse. 2/
Opposing a nation’s right to exist is something you don’t hear about for other countries, including the most abhorrent. No one ever says they’re anti-North Korea or anti-Iran. As abysmal as those nations have become, most people hope to see reform, not destruction. 3/
This is not to say that all anti-zionists are anti-semites, but all anti-zionists are engaging in a form of bigotry that targets Jews, whether they know it or not. 4/
If your idea of social justice is wiping the only Jewish country in the world off the map, you’re literally echoing the words of the Iranian regime. Not a good look. 5/
Make this your mantra:

Legitimate criticism of the Israeli government is perfectly acceptable. Anti-Zionist opposition to the existence of Israel is not. 6/
When a gay person says something is homophobic, we listen.
When a black person says something is racist, we listen.
When a woman says something is sexist, we listen.
When a Jewish person says something is anti-semitic, you should listen too.
Anti-semitism is the only form of bigotry that is not taken seriously, unless it is of the most extreme magnitude. 8/
“But not all Jews are Zionist.”

Yeah, and not all women were suffragettes. A small minority of opposition doesn’t invalidate the overwhelming view of a marginalized group. Every movement has its outliers, and Jewish anti-zionists are no exception. 9/
Jewish anti-Zionism is as old as Zionism itself, but that doesn’t make it any less destructive to global Jewry. 10/
There is nothing progressive about trying to end Jewish right to self determination. If you believe in equality for Palestinians your heart should treasure equality for Israelis too. 11/
Zionism is perfectly compatible with Palestinian solidarity, and for me, my Zionism very much reflects my progressive values, which includes Palestinian statehood. Peace takes mutual responsibility, and casting all the blame on Israel is inherently biased. 12/
Zionism and the history of Israel and Palestine is a multi-layered topic, so there are rarely clear-cut answers that fall into a binary. Coming from a place of respect and empathy is always a good place to start. 13/
Categorically rejecting nations and their trauma adds no value to discourse. If you care about the issues facing Israel and Palestine and seek a fair resolution, a good place to start is by asking questions and making less judgements. 14/
