On the heels of a particularly lively discussion/debate, out of curiosity, I asked the other participant (@SantaErik) if he was atheist. I received an in-depth, well-thought out response that I appreciated, as it helps me to understand a little better where he was coming from.
I don’t agree with many of his perspectives (he doesn't need me to), but I respect him for being able to provide a coherent, logical, educated response that was derived of his own experiences and research, rather than the hackneyed regurgitation of a lemming society.
In return, he asked if I am a Christian. Below is my response, cleaned up a bit because...Twitter...
To answer your question, I'll say yes and no. I'll begin with the no. I do not follow a major doctrine/dogma. I do not associate with a specific brand of Christianity.
I do not consider myself a Catholic or Baptist, for example. I believe man is inevitably fallible and corruptible, more often driven by personal greed, ambition or lusts, and often having an unspoken agenda.
However, I do believe in Jesus Christ. Here is where my beliefs will differ from many. I believe God is the God of the Universe, not just of Earth, and therefore is not bound by a single doctrine or even singular religious figures.
The Universe is far too vast to be uninhabited. With all the other planets, solar systems, and the infinite possibilities for life, it's unfeasible to me that no others would have salvation available to them, simply because they happen to exist elsewhere.
Therefore, I believe Jesus Christ was God's figure for Earth. I believe it's possible there are other "Jesus Christ" figures for other places throughout the Universe. These figures, which I believe to be manifestations of God, were provided to be teachers and to show the path.
I believe we were created with a moral code embedded in our DNA (think genetic learning). The moral code exists on a spiritual level as well, and is not bound by culture, geography, or even species, for that matter. (Have you ever seen a dog show guilt or remorse?)
There are certain attributes that are shared by all, including conscience, which is God guiding & teaching us. When external noise drowns out the voice of God, He sends His physical teacher, to teach, to guide, and to offer all the gift of salvation.
I read a fascinating study about the relationship between the physical world and sound that posited the physical world would not exist without sound. A separate study I read proved the link between sound and emotions/health, which links to the spiritual side.
(Added info) - Interesting video that gives a brief (~6 minutes) overview of the science of Cymatics as explained by Hans Jenny.
(Added info 2) - Great demonstration of Cymatics through music.
(Added info 3) - To determined agnostics/atheists, the Fibonacci Sequence is the largest, most complex, infinite series of coincidences. However, if we set aside our hubris and self-important need to be right at all costs, it's the fingerprint of God.
The Bible states God spoke the Universe, and everything in it, into existence. In my view, the more "advanced" we become scientifically, the more studies we do and the more we learn about the world/Universe around us, the more it proves the reality of God. <end>
