I sincerely believe, and not just as a matter of disciplinary self-gratification, that all 'big' scientific projects should have a resident STS (anthro, soc, history, phil) there doing participatory ethnographic work, but also to assure a kind of accountability.
If literally billions of dollars are being thrown at a project, public or private, it doesn't seem that ridiculous that some kind of critical scholar, whose exact concern is translatability, and accountability to a broader public, should be there working with the people.
It'd certainly be a better use of money than having a bureaucrat, capitalist, politician or non-scientist constantly peering over their shoulders, as this person would be actually participating (though still with critical distance), and wouldn't be there to throw a wrench in it
Also I just love the idea of real time ethnography and history being produced of major (or even minor tbh) scientific discoveries continually--imagine how much that would enrich our knowledge of the techno-scientific process.
Latour & Woolgar are great, but the paradigmatic scholar I think of is Harry Collins--who has been so thoroughly embedded in Gravitational Wave detection for 40 years that he was among the select few people who found out about the successful detection immediately as it happened
Also, Park Doing's work at the Synchrotron, Karin Knorr-Cetina, and Alex Preda's work with scientists and with finance workers, Morana Alac's studies of cognitive science, my own advisor's work with Oncologists, economists & chemists and some other examples.
I don't really care which discipline they come from, but the point is this:
1. They maintain a critical, generalist & outside view of science without
2. Getting in the way
3. Stanning a particular goal and
4. Even participate and help where they can
In some cases--Mirowski, Barad, Doing, Harraway, Avac, and Mackenzie--they actually have a degree in the field their studying but switched to STS after & either did a post-doc in STS or a second doctorate (often while teaching & researching for the first one).
But, really, think of all the shit Musk does, or all the evils Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook etc., are pumping out--imagine if there were a social scientific or humanist conscience there, who also acted as a kind of science journalist, and a kind of critical participant
STS scholars are sympathetic, interested, educated & involved enough to know what's going on, not interfere (or even help) with the scientific process, while distant, critical, outside, & public enough to hold accountable, translate, study & synthesize.
Considering that most corporations, governments & universities now have useless bureaucrats sent in to muck up the scientific work, make sure money isn't 'wasted' (by spending it on wasteful reports), & trying to make specific demands that can't be met irl, we should replace them
👏 REPLACE 👏 ALL 👏 SHITTY 👏 BUREAUCRAT 👏 SHILLS 👏 IN 👏 THE 👏 FIELD 👏 AND 👏 LAB 👏 SCIENCES 👏 WITH 👏 CRITICAL 👏 ETHNOGRAPHERS 👏 AND 👏 HISTORIANS 👏
